Dreams of Flying - Flown Away

Into the air I used to lift,
and with the clouds or stars I’d drift. . .
another place, another day.
My flying dreams have flown away.

No longer do I sail to sky
at night when in my bed I lie.
My feet, once wings, have turned to clay
and dreams of flying flown away.

Now sweet night visions in my head
grow fewer. More I dream instead
I’m lost or late. To my dismay,
the flying dreams have flown away.

Oh, where has gone nocturnal bliss,
and how have plans gone so amiss
that now I find my world turned gray
and dreams of flying flown away?

I long to run, leave ground and then
glide up. . . Why can’t I soar again?
I’m tied to earth and brought to bay
now flying dreams have flown away.

And fleeting time has also flown,
so now I only can bemoan
a fantasy I can’t replay
in dreams of flying. . . flown away.

I hate regrets. I am not sure but I think some of the things we feel that were missed in life seem more inflated as we age...hmm Congrats on the placement

Thanks and I think you are right about things inflating as we age. Maybe I should enter another one of my regret poems. I have one more really good one in my collection.

Dear Andrea, it's a pleasure to return and reread your amazing poem. I too, miss my dreams of flying and I feel your dismay and bemoan the loss of dreamland freedom flights right along with you. Congratulations for your success in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

This is my experience and feelings too. With age setting in, and body becoming weak, this may be a lament rising from everyone. Sad, our feathers have wilted away. Congratulations on your win in the Marathon race.

Andrea, this poem soars with the joy of childhood in realms of fantasy then reminds us that we have grown past that time in our lives but we can still remember. Congratulations on your win. Warm summer blessings to you!

Andrea, congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 3 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Your kyrielle reminds us that as we age we mourn the decline of our childhood imagination. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 4 has already started.

I keep a running tally of the poetry forms for the Poetry Marathon. The majority of the submissions are free verse and rhyme, but I love to add additional forms when possible, as it adds to the variety.

I appreciate this so much. I feel like free verse is more to your liking, so it means a lot to me that I can still get a win with something like a kyrielle.

Hi Andrea, I love this poetry form Kyrielle and I love your poem. So eloquent and beautifully worded. I too, miss my dreams of flying, but when I have one (rarely now) I cherish the memory of my flight. Maybe, my feet will have wings tonight... Congratulations on your win :)

I adore this, Andrea, and so relate ... I always had flying dreams as a child and in my youth, and the older I get, the fewer I have ... it's sad, really, cuz I loved them! Wonderful write - congratulations on FOURTH PLACE!! :-) <3

Nice flow to this poem Andrea. Seems dreams of flying are common. I have never flown in my dreams except in an airplane. Funny that if it is so common that I have never done it.lol love phyl

I know the feeling that your dreams have sprouted wings and flown off without you. But other dreams come, sometimes softly riding a leaf in the breeze. You can't be tethered to the ground. Your poetry will always lift you and us.

A little sad, but very thoughtful. Perfect form for this verse, I think, and beautifully written too. I can't help but laugh at your polar bear poem since I have been in the same boat. I must say your duck poem was very natural; that is one of the things I look for.

Beautiful poem Andrea! Takes us back to our childhood dreams where everything was possible and flying was not unusual. I guess as we grow older we loose that which made opened our minds to possibilities - we become grounded in reality and forsake our dreams. Very well written!

Time is a non-forgiving entity, my friend. Where once we soared impulsively, we are now grounded, our wings clipped.
