Don'T Look Back

Don't look back; it's about the future.     No, No! Think; the past; it's who you are. The past, the past, there's nasty back there.     Some love and soft warmth, too, there must be. You think? Look ahead a whole new path.     You know the old path; it's memories. There are new people and friends to make.     What about your old friends, family? Old friends! They all left you, let you down!     Or was it you let them down? Think, think! They all hate you; even you hate you!     Love yourself, explain; they'll understand. No! They will detest you even more.     You can't lose your past; it's always there. Yes, you can! Just turn your back and walk.     That's leaving; it is not erasing. Don't look back; you will only get hurt.     By what, by who? You're hurting yourself. When you were back then, what did you do?     That was a cry for help; you were lost. Look ahead; no one knows; you are new.     Look back; no one's bothered; you are loved. Pah, you've seen the looks, the smirks, the sneers.     That is in your imagination. Leave, leave now, start a brand new future.     The future comes, stay, keep the past too. Don't leave then; you can just end it now.     You will be missed; turn around, go home...

Although this is not connected to the particulars of your poem, the message is right there: In 1968, a private in the Israeli Army recounted the commander of his tank division saying this during the 1967 War. 'When I say 'Move!' it always means forward! Got that? Because we Jews have nowhere else to go!'... At that time, the country was 9 miles across. That's not a typo. 9 miles width. So, easily cut in half North to South. Also, the Holocaust still hung heavy over the Israeli mindset. :) gw

This is very interesting how you mix past with future. It all goes together. We cannot forget the past but perhaps we can change behaviors for the future.

Thank you, Andrea, for your kind comments; I was trying to explore internal conflict, a theme I return to now and then.

Wow! As I read you fantastic poem, Terry, I kept thinking "look within!" I've been thinking a lot about exactly what your poem says so exceptionally well. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Milton. It was an experiment. Not sure how to describe the style; quite narrative in style though it does have a consistent meter
