13 Things NEVER to Say to a Narcissist if You Value Your Sanity 1. "It's Not all about you" Telling one that line puts them on defense and quickly they will launch their offense Their sense of self-importance is inflated becoming hostile when it's been deflated 2. "Your wrong" Them's fightin' words in a narcissist's eyes They'll attack all those they've come to despise They have a very fragile sense of self esteem Narcissists blame others and work as a team. 3. "I don't care" Expressing indifference infuriates a narcissist They crave attention and simply can't resist getting others' opinions affirming their worth to cover up what they're lacking, their dearth 4. "You're overreacting" This makes them feel dismissed and invalidated Their emotions need feeding... it's substantiated On a soap box they stand... yes, such a drama fingers pointed at them, and they go into trauma 5. "You're being selfish" This will lead them into an immediate backlash for they think they're giving, despite talking trash They have a deep fear of their flaws being exposed To labelling them selfish, they'll always be opposed 6."You're so insecure" Pointing that out to a narcissist always strikes a nerve from denying that truth, arrogant ones will not swerve When accused they react with anger and reproach threatened as if Raid is sprayed and they are a roach 7. "You need help" Suggesting a narcissist needs help sets them ablaze It's a psychological problem and not just a phase To them it's an insult and confrontation will ensue Ignore their hostility. You'll remain sane if you do. 8. "You always do this" Cornering a narcissist into a defensive situation triggers them into becoming a fire of conflagration. Call out their behavior and they'll feel pigeonholed They never want to feel as if they're being controlled 9. "You never listen" They have a desperate need to be important and heard Losing patience when they're not given the last word They cannot stand the thought of being criticized arguing their innocence, demanding others be chastised 10. "You're not as important as you think you are" That would be a direct hit to a narcissist's fragile ego Demanding respect but not any do they often bestow It undermines their self-importance and will provoke them into slinging mud... we've seen it. It's no joke. 11. "You're too sensitive" Saying that makes them feel belittled or disregarded Suddenly, with criticism you'll be the one bombarded They cannot be laughed at or surely, they'll retaliate Narcissists loathe pointing fingers; the truth they hate 12. "Why can't you be like..." Comparing them to someone else builds their resentment Implies they're not good enough, ruins their contentment Without hesitation, they find fault with your perspective as if being kind to others was not a choice or a selective 13. "You don't scare me" That's a direct challenge to their power to be intimidating It robs them of the joy to taunt while they are baiting It objects to their right to be controlling and aggressive a bullying trait they'll not surrender cuz they are obsessive

Lin, this poem performs a much needed public service since toxic narcissism does exist. In some cases, an individual affected may get daily news coverage. Nevertheless, anyone reading your work might ask themselves how they actually do react when confronted by this type of questioning or criticism. That worthy exercise that might lead to better mental health for them. They might be surprised how happy they could be. It’s rather incredible how sad this is for those who have it. Smiles!!!

Yep. I believe you have this one down to a T ~ rather N.. We bless them, and avoid them like the plague. Great writing. A lot of research or you are in that field. Sound analysis and advice. Blessings Lin.

Lin, a powerful poem and collection of facts. I wonder if some will take notice, especially those posting prejudice ageist poems that have nothing to do with narcissism. A fav.

Of course, and they already have. It seems anything I post is taken as hate poetry by a few. Their problem, not mine. Thanks, Tania.

Some fun facts here Lin, and you left the best one to last lol! Never pander to a narcissist or make life easy for them especially if they get in your face, but if you want to de-escalate a situation let them get to the mirror ahead of you, and watch them pine away to nothing:) cheers David

LOL and another LOL, David. None of these were of my own choosing, nor the order, but now that you've mentioned it, it's even funnier. I don't want to be in their faces but they sure like getting in mine. It's fine as long as their angry spittle doesn't get on me. They can dine on their own egos and feast on their blather. Still ignoring the ignorant. You see them for what they are. ;-)

Nothing that happens in the soup is worth going insane over or even allowing it to ruffle your feathers, Chick. It's all scuttlebutt on a children's playground. Always us against the bullies who call us the haters. It's kerfuffle and grumblings, but truth wins out.

Every point was not of my doing. In fact, most of those lines were taken from words written in the article. The only thing worse than a narcissist is one that's deranged and believes this is a hate poem. It's more of a humorous approach to keeping one's sanity when narcissists see only from their blurred vision. Cest' la vie!

Lin, I read your steps 1-13 (I agree) of what not to say. These steps are educational for a person who deals with the public (deescalation is better than escalation), but say you are in a predicament, what are the things that you would say to a narcissist in curbing a confrontation?

lol Connie. Some have a lot to learn about how to win friends and influence people. It's not by doing the very thing they accuse others of doing.

Thanks very much, Connie. I’ve also read 15 of those and it’s been proven in this soup kitchen that they don’t work. Must be a particularly tenacious strain of narcissism.

au contraire, my skilled poetic brother. You own your integrity and your talent as a poet. You've always shown an enormous amount of both and as a friend.
