Dear Heart
Dear Heart,
How I wished I loved you
But you are like a burden that follows me
I hear all that's said and done
Whilst it isn't without merit
It's not good enough
How do we know
When people laugh at our jokes
Whether they are just polite
Our professional advice
Though sought out
Is perhaps their lack of confidence
There are so many polite people
We can't believe their compliments
Those competitions we won
They probably just had sparse numbers
Our friends may drop us when they can
I have to be cruel to be kind
Otherwise we'll make a fool of ourself
Wouldn't that be awful?
Yours sincerely
Your Mind
Dear Mind,
Thank you for taking the trouble to write
I know you are extremely busy
Please pardon what I'm about to say
I think you judge too harshly
Worry too much
Whether our jokes are funny is irrelevant
Joy was shared
I recognise we're not the greatest at all we do
But we're good enough
Told by people we respect that we're valued
That is enough
A compliment is given
To boost the recipient
The gesture is genuine
So should be well received
Rather than doubted
Those competitions aren't about winning
They are cathartic expression
Which I know will be read
By someone somewhere
Who hears our emotional turmoil
The winning is nice
We are untrained
So start from behind the blocks
As for our friends
They aren't tied to us
Yet year on year
We're invited and included
We laugh, comfort and cry together
That means something
Head, I know you fear ridicule
But it doesn't matter
If you get things wrong
From time to time
I'm in the right place
Yours sincerely
