Dear Brother

Cummings dear brother, did you ever know what hit you late at night as you sat all alone on the curb of a street? the car slammed straight into a tree The driver didn’t see that you lay under his car- dead upon impact young and drunk - girlfriend on his lap - he killed you, dear brother, with such pure stupidity on that dreadful night much you had to give the world, for you mattered so much more than the ignorant young man who ran you over How random the act that killed you - you- the best of us all - taken instantly from us on a lonesome street I think that you knew you were doomed! You sent us long letters (something not common for you) before you met fate forty years goes quickly, dear Dale You missed so much from life. Intense emotion from a bare heart that is still raw and painful, I truly hope the numbing sense of loss is able to be bear with the grace you show by penning this piece. Dale knew love and this piece is proof.

Thanks, Weston, he was loved by many and even served a mission for our church. He converted his best friend in high school and was always including people in things and organizing activities. he was months away from graduating law school. If he'd lived, he would be recently retired now from law!!

This is so sad Andrea my friend, you had me sobbing, to be taken out in the prime of his life by a drunk driver, i hope he got time in jail. hope you are doing well dear Andrea, you and I always have a problem with time, extra precious time that we need to attend to attend to write poetry which we both love doing but we haven't, please forgive me. He got nothing, Jennifer, not even a fine to pay. My mom and dad had to spend money on a flight way down to Texas for the trial and pay to have his body brought up to Iowa for the funeral. There is little justice in this world anymore. Was there ever? thanks for your comment.

Thanks, Michael. I had a really cool aunt pass away a few years ago. She is another one I can't wait to see again. My two grandfathers and grandmothers I never got close to, but it will be great to see them again too.

thanks, Milt. I did not really know about this form, but it seemed such a good one to use for a poem about Dale's death. I have write often about Dale, but never in a way that I could explain with details the way he actually died.

thanks for your kind comment, Lisa. he was a stepbrother who came to me when I was 8 years old, but in the other 8 years I got to spend with him (and the few years I saw him on and off during our college years in different places), those were incredible years.

I feel that these people will feel the same pain of suffering that they inflicted on those who were the victims. Who knows. Maybe that guy repented and stopped driving drunk. Guess I will never know.

Talk about trauma! I am so sorry to hear all this. It did make for a beautiful poem but wowzers, that was a lot to go through and again sorry about your loss. The fact that you have a hope to meet up with him in the afterlife must be of a comfort to you.
