Dad's work shed I recall today
the scent of wood and dust in the air
cobwebs in corners and crooks
sun flooding in through windows . . .
his scarred and scored wooden work table
the countless tin cans of nails and screws
Dad working on a new plan
his coffee cup forgotten and ignored
and I would bring him flowers . . .
precious dandelions, buttercups and daisies
which he would place in a dirty container of some sort
smiling, he would lift me up to sit beside him
we would ponder his scribbled sketches
oh, the grand ideas he had . . .
I still have those doodles and outlines
I look at them sometimes and remember
slowly the lazy afternoon would pass
for me and Dad
later we would sit on the rusty porch swing
side by side, just swinging . . .
I would hold his hand so tight
like I never wanted to let it go
but, God had a plan
written in the book of destiny for my Dad
and who am I- to question what God has written
so, I had to let go of his hand
and this is the day I became a writer of poetry

I wrote this poem on the day of my Dad's death July 21, 1997,
at 10am. I had always written things like stories about my cats
or flowers I liked, but on July 21, 1997 two hours after Dad's death
I stood in his work shed with the eyes of a poet for the first time,
and found my poetic voice that day and this began my journey.
I posted this poem on poetry soup in 2013 for a second time, I had
been on the site earlier than that but had left and deleted all my early
poems but it was originally my first poem.
