Toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS now contaminate 70 million acres of U.S. farmland according to estimates from industry groups. This pollution comes from the widespread use of sewage sludge in place of more expensive fertilizer.

Plants soak up the chemicals, which animals and humans eat. Yummy!!

The toxins in dried sewage paste Have left our farm land poison laced This waste on crops spread Won’t hurt if you’re dead And doesn’t affect the food taste Fertilizer’s best bargain brand Is dried solid sludge on farm land Now the food we eat Contains something sweet And our scientists want it banned

Your need and fed of news/truths via limericks are remarkable. You must have a limerick knife that whittles information down to fit its form. While I AM impressed with your talent, I think this might be the place to come if I ever wanted to shake off a good mood. I'm going to quick search for an upbeat one based on titles ... CayCay

CayCay, sorry if this is a downer. We're trying to add a little humor to the depressing news, but I get it. It's hard to think about this stuff entering our food supply. There are no easy answers since there are many people to feed. We can't just wave a magic wand and change the methods we use. This is going to take a lot of effort and dedication.

Clever and apt. Relative now as it was when Tom Leher warned "don't drink the water and don't breathe the air. Although air pollution has abated quite a bit, the EPA is trying to roll back regulation, responsible for the improvement. Listen to TM's National Brotherhood Week. Perhaps even more relevant today. Admire your tenacity, Keep up the good fight! Robert

Thanks Robert. Seems like we haven't really focused on the core issues as a society. We've gotten away with that for some time now, but obviously that will not be the case at some point soon. We're starting to think the thing that might get our attention is....strangely enough...the bond market. I just laugh. This is just the tip of the iceberg and in no way will that really address what we've done wrong to date.

Dear Friend Duke, Your excellent poem highlights the implications of using dried sewage sludge as fertilizer in farming. It stresses the harmful effects of this practice on the planet and human health. The irony of the scenario is underlined by the fact that, although the meal may taste good, it is tainted with toxic substances that might have serious health repercussions. Your word choice is straightforward but so effective. Words like "toxins," "poison," and "trash" convey a feeling of urgency and danger. The contrast in terms like "something delicious" contrasts the concept of flavor with the underlying toxicity, highlighting the irony of consuming tainted food.

Thanks SP. It's amazing how tainted everything is now. At least this site is untainted! Hopefully, poetry won't make us sick. We hope it brings relief and can point us in the right direction. Hope you are well. Smiles!!

Dear duke, This is such a powerful topic youv touched here, unfortunately we cant anymore trust what we eat as we dont know what sort of chemicals are in the food we eat , especially fruits and vegetables too nowadays arent healthy, and poison us more than do us any good! Brilliant limerick on a powerful subject!! Pleasure reading! Sending you light!

IE, you've left me a very kind comment, which I appreciate! We have a huge problem with man-made chemicals in the environment and in our air, water, and food supply. We really don't know how bad this all is, but it's likely pretty awful. It's rather amazing the lengths people and corporations will go in order to accumulate a fortune. Seems their trick is to push the negative effects onto other people and pretend these negatives don't exist. That only works for a short time, and the consequences are approaching for sure. Strangely, politicians seem to want to boost the birth rate and increase the population. I think we would do very well with fewer people on the planet rather than more. We just need to reduce gradually and without inflicting pain. Companies also need to contain toxic chemicals and render them harmless...not disperse them. Take care.

Hello Duke, You said it great and it hits hard and darkly funny, sharp, and so true. You nailed the absurdity of “bargain” sludge fertilizer: it’s sweet only if you ignore the poison. PFAS and toxins in our food chain aren’t punchlines, but your wit makes the warning stick. Thanks for making me laugh and think at the same time. Keep writing-your voice matters, especially on topics like this. Spring Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Thanks Daniel. This is a serious issue and only the tip of the iceberg. There's involvement with big firms and a lot of money at stake. In the end, it's about enriching a select group of people on paper and for the short term by ignoring or hiding the negative consequences over the long term.

We’ve poisoned our planet and to further prove our stupidity, we are poisoning ourselves. Dried sewage paste of waste. Let’s hydrate it and bottle it! It’s all about money. Thanks for bringing it to attention, Duke.

Thanks Lin, you are absolutely about the $$. I recently learned that in Virginia, Synagro, a leading provider of sludge for use as fertilizer, has sought permission to apply more sludge in rural Virginia, according to local filings. Synagro is controlled by a Goldman Sachs investment fund. Who do you suppose is getting rich here? The strange part of it is these billionaires also eat and don't realize it's getting them too.

- We really don't know what we eat... (The immediate cause of cancer development is a combination of: environmental provocateurs (parasites, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, endogenous chemicals, mechanical irritation, eating habits, lifestyle and electromagnetic radiation)... scary, Duke - hugs

Anne-Lise, you point out some of the many issues that can affect our health. We're lucky we've made it to this point. I worry about the proliferation of environmental hazards and have special concerns for young people today. It's hard to protect the environment and have a consumer driven society with a large population. We might be better off with fewer people, but our hope is that getting there doesn't become catastrophic. Take care.

The title is a laugh! Eww, God help us. I'm wondering if my pitcher with the h20 filter really works PUR system. I'm grossed out. Ha, sweet something. This is really serious and I'm now angry. Good job, Duke~ I'll watch the vid now. xhugs. (a classic that still holds truth) great video

Hi Anaya, yes this is really serious. The EPA under DT is relaxing planned regulation of PFAS. In general, it seems as if we are poisoning everything for the sake of cost savings for sewage treatment plant operators, many of which are government entities. Private equity is involved in this business also. It's a question of hurting everyone vs cost savings for polluters who can just dump their toxic compounds into the waste stream with impunity. There's no easy escape from this.
