Cornish Sonnet- For Contest

New Year Dreams lie unfulfilled in my rueful nights, the seconds, minutes, hours and days all draw empty boxes, lists inked on paper white, promises of plans I made, stout hearted, in ignorance of the years gone before when youth's resolve lay stillborn, unstarted. With new old resolutions, stringless kites fly out in fanfare on each New year's day, 'till deaf to all applause they fade from sight to jink and ride the winds of circumstance. 'Just like last year', the well meaning friends say knowing full well that none stood any chance. Dreams lie unfulfilled in my rueful nights, with new old resolutions, stringless kites. For contest 'Cornish Sonnet', sponsored by, coincidentally, Craig Cornish December 20th 2015

Thanks, Andrea. Craig was very kind, hauling this one into his rescue boat, and I think it shows the cut of his jib, in that he will be critical when a piece demands it but, it appears in this instance, positives outweighed the negatives, so I got a place, which is better for my confidence than an N/A. I'm sure you'd have done the same, coz thats the type of Gal you are x

viv, of the cornish sonnets I have seen on this very difficult theme (because it is so ordinary I find it hard to do something fresh for it) YOU stand alone as someone who has written a very unique way. My only worry is that your syllable counts are uneven and your poem not metered the way Craig wants; well, it will be interesting which three people win in his very narrow margin of winners he will have. AT least for creativity, this one should get points.

Thanks, Andrea, I should have spotted 9 syllables on line 5, now corrected. I know meter is a little off on the first sestet, I tried to dabble with it but only messed up more. As for the extra points for iambic pentameter, I was a little out of my depth on this style of Sonnet anyway, so took it as far as I have. Win or lose, it seems to have had a few positive comments. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it x

Yes, Lindsay, I think that rather than trying to man up with some tough resolutions, I shall simply modify all of the aspects of my life and improve them by a mere ten percent- that way, nobody will notice, and I'll feel better. And less broke...... All the best, Viv

You mastered this sonnet form fantastically well my friend. A truly great entry and a superb sonnet! I give this a solid 10 (A7 WILL HAVE TO DO HERE). GOOD LUCK IN CRAIG'S CONTEST. Maybe I should have written for it but am not much on veering away from my usual sonnet forms that I so dearly love.. Good luck my talented friend!

Thanks Robert, I don't really concentrate on Sonnets as oft I ought, but this style made for an interesting departure. Merry Christmas to yuo and yours, and all the best for the New year. Regards, Viv

You chose a pretty good theme for this sonnet, Viv. I have never made resolutions in my life (not because I'm perfect!!) but no motivation ever urged me to:) Lovely conclusion, by the way. ~ Regards // paul

If you have to pick a resolution, Paul, may I suggest our old British wartime phrase, 'Keep calm and carry on'. That should cover it. Regards, Viv

One year I made 3 New Years resolutions... to quit smoking, to exercise regularly and to modify my diet. I kept 'em all for seven months believe it or not. The dietary restriction was the first to go!! I've had many stringless kites since then... BRAVO Viv! Best wishes, Keith
