Copy

i am a copy of a copy of a copy screaming, originality! a functional fallacy that we are created as individuals when really we are predetermined by DNA Don’t tell me what to do! Nothing defines who I am! Aside from you existing in half of me still, I fail to understand the complexities that weave us together if I am just a copy how can I be better? i want to be a rainbow fish with something shiny and unique to give follow the advice of the wise octopus and live so freely like the other fish yet, I worry I will always be a shark lurking in dark waters the terror of the sea giving birth to copies of copies of copies of me the residue left behind Ribs in a tide Nudging at my spine Answering for questions these ghosts have left behind a message from a former me thrice i've now denied the existence of the copy her body left behind

I'm not saying that there has to be constant arguing or even a loss of respect, it is more of a child's discovery that their parents are human. They make mistakes too. The bad part of this is that as a child, we also have no way of knowing that our parents, likely, have more to offer us with their years of experience than we as children are willing to listen to, and only come to realize that after it's too late. The hard part is sorting through the crap that muddles their wisdom.

Rebellion is one of those traits that help us as children, and our parents, to know when it is time for us to leave home. If there is no conflict between the two, children could not grow into adults and might not be capable of meeting life's challenges when it is thrust upon them. It is difficult to make your own decisions when you've never had to do so. Conflict pushes you to do just that as it also helps us to re-evaluate how we view our parents and the choices they have made.

I must say, we are all products of both our genes and our surroundings. We see what is offered us by our surroundings and make our own decisions as to whether we wish to follow in our parents path or step out on our own. I noticed the use of the word "rebellious" in your response to my comment. This I would assume meant some difficulties in your relationship with your mom at times; although, rebellious often has a negative connotation associated with it, it is not necessarily a negative thing.

A great write Andy, but always remember the old argument of nurture versus nature. Do you think you would be the same person you are if raised by a different mother or born in a different culture. Even if you have to be a shark perhaps you can still decide which kind you would like to be, a vicious brown shark, a hammerhead or maybe a docile nurse shark or perhaps a rainbow shark. I believe you have a daughter(?). Isn't it wonderful seeing a copy of you staring back at you through her eyes?

Hi James! You bring up an interesting point. If I look at this as being my mother's daughter, my life has worked out eerily similar to my mother's life in ways that cannot be explained with any certainty. While I cannot deny who I am or where I come from, I can and have chosen a different path for myself, different ideals. I feel like this is the premise of this write. We all want to be our own person but there is inherit traits that will always be attached to us and the fear that my daughter my some day feel the way I once did, to not be nothing like me, the way I never wanted to be anything like my mother growing up as a rebellious teen.
