First appeared in my book of the same title, 2005, now out of print.

The radiation had shrunk the tumor they told her after eight weeks of treatment No one knows how long we have she said bravely We're better off than the birds Yes, they work incessantly I answered making polite conversation while my heart shed silent tears If they tell me I'm going she said, smiling I'll eat all the cookies I want With a little wine I agreed, knowing she loved blackberry wine

Thank you, Jan. Yes, it is a cruel, cruel disease. The poem was written for a friend, but I also lost a brother recently to cancer. I baked his favorite pies in the weeks before Hospice became involved.
