Come, Stand With Me
Come, stand with me on the brink of disaster
Surveying the bedlam which lies at our feet,
And wonder what we might have done different,
Our future? We might have been more discreet.
We might have given thought to commonsense,
Examined potential pitfalls in decision-making
Sought the wisdom of those who’ve gone before
Paid less attention to politic and mindless faking.
I suspect we’d rediscover the value of hindsight
And, perhaps, make application for tomorrow
Seeing what we have done to create such chaos,
Learned from tomorrow’s worries not to borrow
I see a looming chasm between past and future,
Which the present, as I see it, cannot suture.
