Civility

Civility is a contextual axiom. It means something different in each scene, As the banquet in the governor’s mansion is different from “in company of a Queen”. Civility in the heated town hall meeting, may mean shouting at a lower decibel While civility at a poet’s reading May mean total quiet at the table. No one expects more than that which is due. Rights don’t exceed the other person’s word. Order is maintained in the way it is supposed to. We all have our turn, to act or be heard. © Apr 06 2010

Very thought-provoking perspective on civility, Charles. I guess it does mean different things at different times. The dictionary simply defines it as "politeness." But you have given some good examples and I really enjoyed the line "No one expects more than that which is due." If we behave civilly toward others, hopefully that behavior will be offered to us in return. Great poem! Love, Carolyn
