Quickly wrote this prose/short story this morning about how AI can affect people in ways we may not see ourselves.

Written for AI-Blessings and curses contest by Tom Woody

Oliver was born in 2004 to an engineer father and a cashier mother. From a young age he loved to play sports and was an avid martial artist. At primary school he was an over-achiever, but his secondary teacher, once wrote how Oliver, preferred to look out of the window, rather than concentrate on class and how his 'smart phone,' had been confiscated several times. Oliver, was eleven, when his very busy parents bought him his first iPhone. By the age of fourteen, Oliver was addicted to social media, gaining popularity on apps like TikTok and Instagram. He had lost all interest in sport, despite his bedroom being full of trophies. He started to dress in dark clothes and dyed his hair jet black, which floated over his forehead. Slowly, one piercing led to several. This was when he met Poppy and slowly fell in love. Both of them used to sit at the back of English class, going through reels. Oliver wrote his first poem about how much he loved her. Describing the silver streak in her black hair and the dimples that appeared on her cheeks when she smiled. At sixteen, Oliver and Poppy both finished school with bad grades. His parents were pretty disappointed and an argument broke between Oliver and his dad, where he decided to run away. That night he got drunk along with Poppy and had unprotected sex. Oliver was 'sofa surfing.' for three months, before Poppy told him, she was pregnant. Being from a strict religious family, she decided to keep the baby, much to the disappointment of Oliver. However, he promised he would do his best for the child. He had been gaining a bit of fame on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram with his 'spoken word' poetry and was occasionally paid to perform at festivals, but it was not enough. His father took pity on him and got him an apprenticeship at his engineering firm. He started well, but was sacked after a while for being on his phone, turning up late for work and making several mistakes. Unable to find work, he started to sell cannabis, getting caught up in the murky world of drugs and addiction. Several times he was beaten and robbed. Eventually, like every drug dealer he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison. Missing the birth of his son, Charlie. Whilst serving his term, he started to study for some qualifications and used his poetry to inspire others to change their lives. As a result his sentence was reduced to two years. He left prison at eighteen, ready to be part of society and behave maturely, especially as he had not used his smart phone for two years. His father had seen the change in him, so asked his boss if Oliver could return, but most of the work at the firm had been replaced by Artificial Intelligence, so there was no room for him. His mother was unable to help, as cashiers were being replaced by 'self check out' registers. Oliver, now reunited with his son, wanted to be a good role model and provide for Poppy and Charlie. He applied for several jobs, but his criminal record and many employers not requiring human labour, meant he was unsuccessful. He set up a creative writing class, but found the majority were using AI to write and found this disturbing. Although he had many attending his sessions, he gave up, disenchanted with the literature world. Such is the vicious cycle for many a criminal, he fell back into dealing drugs. It was an easy pay packet. Despite making a lot of money, Poppy, could not be around this lifestyle and decided to walk away and granted him no permission to see Charlie nor did she accept any of his 'dirty' money. One night, a drug deal went wrong and a fight broke out. Defending himself, Oliver stabbed a rival drug dealer. Running from the police, he ran towards a cliff. Tired from life... Soaking in the rain... Oliver stood at the edge... His lonely eyes staring into the nothingness his life had become... He didn't think twice, before he jumped.

Hurts the heart! Why does mankind try to take our humanness and send it over a cliff! Too much free time, not enough to keep young hands busy and creating too. Computers were contained in a large room when I was a child. I got a calendar rudimentary printout at Dad’s workplace. The rest of my world was a breath of fresh air outside the world of computers. Great and sad write, dear Silent!

A wasted life, a repeated scenario by too many in our present day society. Were governments not complicit, wanting a dumbed-down, addicted society, these tragedies would be happening with far less frequency -- a healthy society, a free thinking society, guided by God and social responsibility for less fortunate others, is much more difficult to control for selfish gains. With science where it is now, much human labor is being replaced by machines and computers, the elites of the world are thinking of ways to get rid of several billion extras -- for the good of the planet of course...that eliminates conscience.

Oh, sorry, congratulations. A remarkable write. The problem is less technology -- I am all for technology, to mars and beyond! The problem is, evil greed.

Hello, Silent One, it's been a long time, I lost touch here. Your story is a piece of fact from the lives of so many affected by the cyber world. Unfortunately, educational system is slow to adapt to changes. We should have guidance for youngsters and parents. Your writing leave us to think more deeply towards this. Being in the academic field I can see the damage it is doing to all age groups. Very well expressed. Hugs Sunita UPD

Excellent story. And I think it could be true as I think if the job market being overtaken by robots. Maybe they will even replace us teachers!

Silent One, your nicely written, but sad story, brings to mind the time when computers first began displacing workers. It makes one wonder where it will all end, since AI is taking over more and more jobs. Best wishes for the contest. :)

It has crossed my mind that some here on PS might wish to have been famous poets earning a living as such, but for most it can only be a hobby. I can imagine myself in that position (lol)--being adored as a poet. We have to find something we like that will support us. In a decent society, all people capable of work should have that opportunity. Things always change, and we should develop the ability to adapt for sure. Your poem illustrates what happens when we do not. People suffer terribly!

SO, your poem shows some of the issues with social media and how it can affect the social skills of those using it too much. Sad how the parents were busy, the school missed the opportunity to rehabilitate Oliver, and he was allowed to get by. Once these early opportunities are lost, it's much harder to set a life straight. I think Oliver is a tragic figure. He had talent, but could not apply it in a means that would provide success. As certain kinds of AI take jobs away, society can use this as an opportunity to train people for careers that will be in demand and which will preserve the earth. As self-driving trucks become more popular, for example, it's possible that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost. We would hope government will encourage programs that provide some acceptable alternatives for displaced people.

Good gosh what a sad story. And you say you're not a storyteller, per say. We'll remember Oliver as surely as we remember Thomas Woodward. Excellent effort big guy

Oh gosh S, what a heart breaking story this is and I have a feeling its all too real. Thank you for making us aware of how vulnerable we truly are, we need to pool together our human genes and leave out A I, when we can, no replacement for profound soul talk, it may have saved a life , :(

Such a great rendition and a sad story. I love how real this is and how the emphasis on the effect of addiction and bad habits was keen. Sometimes people need to make mistakes more times to understand the consequences, however, not everyone lives to learn. Life alone is hard and we endure, and take certain healthy but hard and long decisions just so we can build a foundation that lasts and is passed down to our children. Poppy took the right turn but children should remain children until they get

To be adults. And for the case of Al. I don't think anyone or a company that needs authentic work would fully depend on Al. It's a merry-go-round and to attain originality through Al you need a smart human to curl around their sleeves. To input a craft and let them enhance it not give them the entire job to do. Unless Al can breathe and feel, there's a limit to what it can do. Social media is a tool for growth and a side stool for failure, just like every other thing in the world. The major deal is to be in control. Once anything takes control over you, then it's a problem. It could be food, alcohol, etc. Great work as always Silent. I really did miss reading your heavenly pieces. I've been emotionally, physically and mentally stressed and unstable.

So many kids, bright and promising like Oliver, are being swallowed by the addictive world of innovative smartphone platforms. Their reliance on these devices is not just a minor distraction, but a significant threat to their academic performance, as evidenced by plummeting grades and poor attendance. This concerning trend is not just a passing phase, but a serious issue that is further exacerbated by increasing association with negative influences, drugs, and ultimately, jail sentences. Sadly, this situation is not an isolated case, but a reflection of the alarming reality of many young individuals who grapple with addiction to modern technology. You have written this with startling insight into the sad future for some. All the best for the contest.

Great moral in your prose dear silent one, so well woven and delivered, in a very detailed and engaging manner. Today, so many are losing their jobs, or rather not finding jobs , and are forced to find different ways to earn: we are slowly seeing signs of this in many parts of the world. This prose is so very powerful and it takes a very empathetic soul to comprehend and describe a character in such detail. It was like i was watching a movie, as i read your story. I feel for this character and what he has been through! Its challenging for them and so heart wrenching too! Brilliant where you went with the prompt and how you delivered it! Very unique approach! Best wishes for the contest
