Carnage Caused By Vanity

Above the clouds are buffalo aplenty
Shot by whites as Native Americans cried
The tribes made use of all portions of their prey
European settlers only sought their hides

Palin bragged of killing moose as a young child
Did this tough meat truly feed her family
Perhaps their heads were displayed o’er a fireplace
And Palin’s explanation -- chicanery

A dozen ducks once roamed a wooded forest
First babes, then mother, lost their lives to sportsmen
It makes you wonder who could eat so many
More likely targets for those with a killing yen

Early man killed only to survive the wild
Natural order brings hunters into play
There’s no “sport” in killing for other reasons
Souls of those needlessly killed rise above the fray

Staring down in sadness as others are shot
Where is the logic and the humanity
In amassing trophies while chugging down beer
Who can stop this carnage caused by vanity

some do hunt for food. but unfortunatly there will always be the poachers. may in their heaven they become the animals they killed reborn.

I am right with you Diane. Me? I hunt with a camera - same sense of being one with nature, tracking down the intended target, but less damaging when the shot is taken. I do not get the "sport" in hunting. Yes, some do eat their trophies - but they do not have to hunt and kill to feed their family - they do so for sport. As you say, vanity minus humanity. Nicely written. Good rhyme and good message. Joe

Diane, you have asked the question that beggars the mind with this work. Not only is its rhyme beautiful, but the message contained by your words gives it so much power. Congrats on your HM in the contest. Dan C

Diane; I have a summer cabin in Alaska and see this type of activity every summer. It's sickening and disheartening, particularly the plight of the Stellar Sea Lions. Wayne

It is a fact that nature is definitely misused by man due to his ignorance and indeed vanity or arrogance. Nature rises to try and make man see the need for respect and humility. Great write, Diame! Good luck in the contest. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your kind comments on my latest. Caroline.

You're right. Hunting for survival is a necessity, but killing for sport is a travesty. Well done, Diane! Love, Carolyn

Splendid poetry Diane. Hunting for murdering sake. At lewast the hunter gatherers did what they did for survival, and in most cases the species survived. Good luck in the contest with this most enjoyable piece >> James

Love your title Diane. Yes of course all caranage is caused by the carnal minded concept, that is void of precept(Love). You made my day with your comment on my poem. Thanks so much. Agape, Moses
