Can I Mention Angels Or Jesus
I was pulled into the principal’s office.
She whispered that two children’s father had died.
They had not been told. Their mother wanted us to do it.
I told the principal I did not think it is our job.
I said it was the mother’s.
I am the school counselor, but I am under her jurisdiction.
So I stay while she tells the two children their father has died.
The mother speaks a language I do not speak.
Neither does the principal, so there is an interpreter.
The principal wants me to talk to the children while she talks to Mom.
I ask the interpreter to ask Mom if I can mention heaven, God, Jesus,
or any belief in life after death such as angels, spirits, if that would be okay.
The interpreter speaks in their language to Mom.
Then the interpreter turns to me and says “No.”
I am stunned.
Wondering how these children
will be able to survive the death of their father
under these circumstances.
