Cain’s Exile of Inherent Beingness

What if Cain's punishment in the story "Cain and Able" from the book of Genesis was to wander the earth eternally as an immortal. Never finding true peace, rest, or everlasting love. Welcome to my narrative journey to find out.

Blessings,

Daniel Henry Rodgers

===========================

Mark The earth turns its face from you as if ashamed. You who tilled the soil, now marked by what the soil received. Your brother's blood— how it murmurs, how it screams. Deafness would be a mercy. Wanderer At Babel, you watch them build their tongues a discordance of hope. You know better. The tower falls. Always, things fall. In Athens, questions hang in the air like ripe fruit. You reach for one find your hand empty. Constantinople burns. You've seen this fire before in your own heart, in Abel's eyes. Love Her laughter—sunlight on water. For a moment, you forget remembering the weight of your name. Time, that relentless thief, steals her breath, leaving you with pockets full of silence, her absence echoing in your eternal night. Witness Verdun. Mud and blood indistinguishable. You've carried this earth before, will carry it again. In Selma, voices rise. You join the chorus, unseen. Your story spoiled, yet written in every cry for justice, a testament to your own unending quest for peace. Grace The sea spilling secrets waves crashing against the shores of your soul. In a quiet cell, you contemplate forgiveness— that impossible shore. Your heart is a vessel of unspoken prayers. Each wave a reminder: the divine as elusive as your peace. Mortality She sees you—truly sees. Beyond the mark, the myth, to the man who carries centuries in his bones. You learn to love in moments, not millennia. Each breath a gift, each touch a benediction her presence a bridge to your humanity. Return The earth no longer rejects you. You lay down, finally into the arms of the brother you've carried all this time. Abel smiles. You close your eyes. The silence, at last, is sweet.

Oh wow... finding Forgiveness at last? I love this idea and how you've written it... so full of heart. We don't read of Cain or Abel in the progeny of Adam. One because he died young without children of his own, the other because... well was he Adam's seed? Consider! Love this poem!! Xo

Dear Crystol, Thank you for your wonderful thoughts. I just loved reading them this morning. You ask some really great questions. Genesis talks about God marking Cain and his heirs to protect them. I often thought that maybe God had another plan for Cain that we are not fully aware of. Thanks for your wonderful visit. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Hello Tom, I think most people who read poetry for fun typically like the shorter poems. However, like you I like building narratives that come to life in story format. Thanks again Tom for reading this one. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The ending is so sad and made me tear up, i think we muslims also do have this story about cain and able, although im not very good at these stories, or historic aspects of religion, i can praise this story for the poignant and soul touching nature of storytelling as well as how youv painted imagery in such a flawless manner! So well written and crafted! I especially love “ The sea spilling secrets waves crashing against the shores of your soul. In a quiet cell, you contemplate forgiveness—“ ah so moving and alliterations are just beautiful here! Yo always come up with different themes in your poems and its all very engaging and leaves a poetic and soulful impression! Pleasure reading this! A fave it is sending you light always

Dear Empress, I believe that the Muslims do have this story which is a part of the first book of the Torah (Genesis) although may not be considered divine. I have always had a thought about Cain and if he actually found his salvation after being separated from his family right after murdering Abel. Genesis does say that God did put a mark on him to protect him as he wandered out. So my Mythological take was to have Cain as an eternal wanderer seeking out salvation and finally reaching the present day and finds a woman who helps him discover it. I always look forward to reading your amazing read on my poems. Thanks for being there! - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

This story is well told in the poetic form you chose. Many great lines, such as "The sea spilling secrets," and "to the man who carries centuries in his bones." The ending is so emotional.

A great poem. I loved how you managed it and the ending was great. Have you ever heard the story of the wandering Jew who opted for eternal life but forgot to think of eternal health? He now roams the earth for death.

doing beautiful story telling is second nature to you, Daniel...the redeeming value in the end, the coming together of cain and abel in peace, was definitely cathartic!

Dear Nette, so grateful for your comments and encouragement. I often wonder what happened to Cain and we know that many of his generations went astray. But I would like to think he realized the Lord set him aside and protected him. I guess we will never know in this lifetime. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

I really liked this unusual take on Cain It will be interesting to learn one day how God deals with murderers Personally I think it will depend on their remorse.

Dear Andrea, Thank you for your comments. It will be interesting to see if Cain makes it to heaven. He was marked by God that no one was to harm him. He did have many generations that went astray but the flood would have destroyed all his generations. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The story of Cain and Abel is given a positive ending. I am glad you have done so. Cain's fate after killing his brother was to roam the earth, never finding peace or rest. After killing his brother when God asked Cain- "Where is Abel', his arrogant reply was- Am I my brother's keeper?' It still resounds in many parts of the world when brothers turn against brothers. However through repentance, you have changed Cain's fate. He gets the pleasure of dying in the arms of Abel who forgives him and he finally gets peace for which he has been questing all his life. Beautifully done, dear Daniel

Dear Valsa, You are always so gracious and my heart is filled with your words. I love speculating about history especially when we do not have evidence one way or another. I would like to think that perhaps after being marked by God and become a wanderer did he ever come back to trusting God. Perhaps not, but maybe so! - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

O, Daniel! I’ve been off & very glad i returned to read this! I’m fascinated by Cain, but too, by Adam for reasons sinilar as you wrote for both men…cain = his brother. Adan = mankind.bAnguishing sins, search for peace, resolution. For both men: the Why me? the possibllity of forgiveness. Fave! Beautiful! Provoking!

Interesting premise. There is an old Star Trek episode - Requiem for Methuselah that carried a similar theme of an immortal who lived many lives. Cain was a loser and a murderer. Abel will return in the resurrection to come, a vindication of sorts

Good Morning, Tom, I do remember that episode from Star Trek. You are right that Cain was a murderer and God called him on it. For punishment for his crime God cursed Cain to be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth. But before he sent him God also placed a mark on Cain to protect him from being killed by others ensuring that anyone who harmed Cain would suffer a sevenfold vengeance. We will never know for sure but before his life ended did he give himself over to God or was he lost forever. Of course, the flood came on the scene with Noah and all was wiped out except Noah's family. - Blessings My Friend, Daniel
