'Beautiful' was Barbara Frees
'Beautiful' was being kids
was that Folgers can of crayolas
how she colored the black horse -
'Beautiful' like her hair
not a line not a thread spilling over
'Wonderful' that she liked me so much
'Wonderful' how quietly thoughtful
how dainty how proper
'Beautiful' that day how she cried
how she looked when she cried
mother back in town
visit over
Then years later
I saw her at school
Saw her on the stairs
'Beautiful' and more than any girl there
and still more -
'Beautiful' how she noticed me waved smiled
'Beautiful' such a wonderful memory survived
