Friends, neighbors, countrymen, I come to bury Caesar not to praise him. Of course he was no famous emperor, although he was proud and tough enough to think he was the king of our alley. Poor Caesar, a life cut short by some irresponsible driver squashed him down in the middle of the street and kept on going, a reckless fool. So bury Caesar we must, even though he has no coffin to speak of, no flowers by request, that's to be expected, but why he was not given any proper shroud? No prayers are said, poor Caesar, but tears flow quickly enough for he was loved by all, children and old folks; and now I cannot fathom how I’ll miss his welcoming joy when I come back from work, or our lovely trips in our large public garden. Who will wake me up early in the morning, when I will never hear his awful barking at each blessed dawn of day....poor dog! Note: This is actually a repost of a poem I once deleted but never reposted.

I'm so very sad for Caesar. Is this the end, or will there be another?

Wow I really like this one. Why did you ever delete it. That whole time I imagined a cat and not a dog! I guess because of the term alley cat

Dear Victor, Oh, so heartfelt and quietly profound. The echo of Shakespeare’s famous oration gives it a touch of wit, but the loss you describe is so real-Caesar wasn’t a ruler, just a beloved dog, yet his absence leaves a king-sized hole. I truly felt the tenderness in every line, the ache of routine now silenced. Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The emotion felt by Mark Anthony when Caesar was assassinated and the emotion felt by the poet when Caesar his pet knocked down by a careless driver which the poem makes me ponder.Nicely penned

Till the end, I never knew that you were speaking of the death of a dog. I thought you were referring to the death of a man named Caesar, knocked down by an irresponsible driver. Indeed, your poem has a dramatic opening and an interesting twist at the end.
