Every poem is music, that speaks of tragedy, happiness, and fragility of life, of death, of passion, dreams, mystery, and wonder. Oh, I could go on and on. When we write a poem it is all about the meter and rhythm of the words. Like a breath in and out, pauses and gallops we create. It is the depth of our pen, the stresses of words. We create a mood, and create a poetic journey. We have the ability to bring tears, laughter, wonder, to plunge the reader into our world. If a poet can learn to write in meter, a beautiful experience in writing will be yours, writing using Iambic, Trochee, and many of the other metrical patterns is a valuable gift to learn. The resulting poems are quite beautiful to read. However, poems written with rhythm are just as lovely. I like pattern when writing, for example in the syllable count on each line, the rhyming pattern, the number of lines in each verse. It gives the poem a tidy, clear direction. (Although, I have been known to go wild with my writing and throw all pattern to the wind.) When, we want to be taken as a serious poet, we must, must learn to write with pattern and rhythm. And another very important factor is emotion, our word selection must bleed with our emotions. The reader will feel the depth of our writing just dripping off the page if we can learn to write with rhythm, emotion and yes, meter. There are many books available on how to write meter, get one and teach yourself. But, do teach yourself to write with feeling, give us pauses and times to weep.
oh my darling- I stand at your cold tomb, my life empty and forlorn without you; our sweet baby boy grows in my womb. for him, I must throw off this deathly gloom. Any day now, our sweet son is due . . . I will bring him, my darling- dressed in blue. __________________________ August 1, 2018 Written for the contest, Reads Like Music sponsor, Line Gauthier First Place
