Between Man and Boy

The silent street in evening shade
Glistening wet with shallow puddles
Where a frightened dog drinks
And runs
A hand in his neck, constrained
A guide without compromise
Bypassers glance without seeing
Avoidant
There are no questions, they left
aeons ago, in a life near forgotten
with voices barely remembered
and laughter
His humanity does not exist here
In the twilight zone between man and boy
At an age other children play with dolls
or bears
And his is a world beyond tears or hope
A world where only peers exist with
the same emptiness in their eyes
and pain
