Ink's Break the Silence Contest * March 5, 2025

Mirror, mirror on the wall ~ don't let me fall for a narcissist's words for fear I'll find myself tangled in the web of silk threads cunningly spun to lure me in. You might take those words to heart... A narcissist is needy and compared to the sun, for they think everything revolves around them. George Eliot wrote, "He was like the Cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow."* It's a marvelous metaphor to depict a self-centered individual who masterfully mistreats others. Malicious manipulation bleeds from their veins as they sit on a throne of their own making, taking aim on gullible ones who think they are sincere. It's a game they play, finding fault and placing blame on anyone who calls them out and then they pout when they don't receive enough grandiose attention. Machiavellian by nature, a chameleon by choice, as a means to their end of being seen as a kind soul. With dodgy deception, they portray themselves as the victim, while readying a new web. Like a spider, they conceal their intentions in shadows, camouflaged like a serpent, coiled in wait to strike. Comparing a narcissist to a serpent is not farfetched. It's etched in their mind that they have the right to be bold and bite any hand that exposes them. But it's a tale that must be told before they are too bold. They've not been ordained as divine or deity, although obsessed with being idolized, they might be. It's important to present themselves in good light, being witty but sly is their plan to take command and will not hesitate to infringe on anyone's boundaries. But woe to those who'd dare cross their threshold for they have the need to maintain complete control. They're starved for attention so, don't feed their ego. Ignoring them will ignite their anger and set it ablaze. Dousing their gaslight by depleting their source of fuel will draw their ire and set off their fuse. Then, they will cry out, "I'm the victim of abuse!" That's the excuse offered from their coffer of tools... the sharpened weaponry of pen and tongue they use. You have a choice to stop being played like fools. Break the passive silence that you've been keeping, and in a voice clear and strong, point a finger and say, "Narcissistic conduct is terribly wrong!" Lock them in a cage where their vanity can't take flight, out of sight of the innocent, not yet caught in their web. "Will you walk into my parlor?" said the spider to the fly.** Let your answer thunderously roar and look them in the eye. "NO! I can resist you because I know you are a narcissist. You claim to be kind, but I know what's really on your mind and it's designed to hoodwink others to believe it's not a plot. You swore that you're nice, twice, thrice... but you're not." To get their way, they persistently pretend innocence, laying a guilt trip on those who refuse to buy into it. Don't be suckered in by them, and before it's too late, remain mute no longer and you will escape the entrapment of their woven web of deceit. Defeat the narcissists, and when they claim you are a hater, smile and tell them they've worn out that old accusation, and you'd be glad to challenge them in a public debate. * George Eliot ** 'The Spider and the Fly' by Mary Howitt

Dear Lin, this is the perfect textbook definition of narcissist, and narcissism, and as i have seen too many in my real life, couldnt help but agree. One of those writes that needs to be published online for many to read and understand and to gain strength to break free from the cycle of narcissistic abuse, as narcissists are good at love bombing, manipulating, and luring their partners back into thinking that they cannot live without them. The ending shows strength and is a powerful take definitely! Great picture to go with it, did you find it online? Pleasure reading! Congratulations on your win: and thank you for joining in raising awareness! Appreciate your support

Hi, Ink and thank you for finding my lines worthy of a winning place on your list. If more awareness was made available perhaps they’d slink off into a corner until they realize how many people they alienate. Doubtful they’d accept seeing themselves in the light for their arrogance overshadows everything else. I found a good use for AI when looking for a picture. I appreciate you and your contests.

Lin, I can see your wave of emotion in this poem as it hits the shores of the narcissist(s). It's great. Your words carry a lot of punch ... as when I was reading your poem it was like I was watching a prize fight that you won and ... deservingly so. This is a great one.

Ha Len. If only my words could land a knockout punch on the jaws of narcissists. Thank you for putting the belt around my waist. ;-)

Merci, Jan. It was as much to write as it was to find it on Ink's winner's list

Lin, I love how you have defined the characteristics with so many examples of what they do. It's plain as day, but some people (who shall remain nameless) just don't want to look this the way it really is. Life is too short to waste in this way, but these narcissist personalities will never understand giving and caring. I kinda wonder what bad circumstances affected these poor souls when they were young.

Thanks very much, Duke. I won't even bother to address what could've happened in their lives to have created such a self-centered monster. Time would be wasted and second and third chances given to the nameless one have all been useless. Those spots on a leopard must be tatooed.

Well you’ve certainly written the book on all things narcissistic Lin, in this brilliant (open ended) exposé, hard to believe a person could have all the above nasty traits, unless of course they were witnessed first hand, only problem as you say to Tom below, any narcissist reading this won’t care less, and will carry on regardless, they are the victim after all! I only see a top winner here, cheers David

I’m afraid it’s almost book length, so thank you for reading it through. Narcissism is an attitude that is brazen and beastly, and if it changes it dives deeper into the dark. It gives no quarter even if a back is turned to it. Always finding a way to get at its quarry. See? I was going on again. Lol. Thanks for your insightful comments, David.

Think we've all been played like fools Lin - I especially love "Malicious manipulation bleeds from their veins as they sit on a throne of their own making, taking aim on gullible ones who think they are sincere. It's a game they play, finding fault and placing blame on anyone who calls them out and then they pout when they don't receive enough grandiose attention". hugs jan xx

Oh, yes we have and it’s a game I don’t intend to play. From now on when a narcissist makes a move we’re going to post this poem title: Not today, tumbleweed. Just that and nothing more. Thanks a lot, chick.

Powerful write Lin. So many narcissists are textbook - a simple check list would suffice you'd think. Hopefully 35 poems on Soup will be somewhat of an education and we'll all be eagle eyed from here on in. Indeed, the "not today" line will remain on the tip of my tongue should I encounter their antics - best of luck in the contest

Thanks a lot, Dilly. A checklist might suffice if one would agree to read it. The "not today' phrase sounds like a great idea. If we're taunted by a narcissist, we should post it on PS. No names, no poems... just a title Not Today."

Well if anyone is unsure of what a narcissist is they should read this, brilliant Lin. A fave for me. Tom

You know what the real Problem is, Tom? They don’t see themselves as fitting that mold, or they do and don’t give a fig. Gonna do what they wanna do. Thanks, Mayor.
