Being a Sunflower

Being a sunflower
in an ocean of sunflowers is exhausting
constantly striving to be the most perky
It cannot be done.
There is always a perkier sunflower
Next door or ten rows back, grinning and waving
Showing the rest of us up
I cannot be the most enthusiastic
or the most excited
I strive to be the best me sunflower I can be
It is all I have

And speaking of the master, just last week I got an email from a Dutch friend who has learned she's related to van gogh through his first cousin, Adolpj le Comte, a Belgian artist who died in 1921.
