Basic Needs

Hidden away, deeply recessed, From the earliest brain. Lies the need for survival, Only meaning to sustain. The roots seek to feed, And satisfy the desire. As water flows throughout, Heating conflict to fire. Rarely does the effort allow, The most passive retreat. Since the fight is confronting, The need to compete. This experience becomes a tutorial, For all that we've learned. Where nothing is simply given, Work demands it be earned. The observation directs reality, Beyond the solitary pursuit. Recognizing partners can be found, To efficiently recruit. Such bonds may give to those, The means to love and procreate. With family as the basic group, To look past all the hate. While the young thirsts to adapt, The elders mentor to teach. Passing on what they've observed, With expressions they can reach. The exchange between young and old, Flows both ways, to be sure. As lessons allow improvement, Caressing time to endure. Even though some are elusive, And difficult to measure. The risks may balance the pain, And grant some innate pleasure. Through all the trials and troubles, Some ignorance is removed as planned. As the needs become more simplified, And mankind begins to understand.
