Barn Owl

I often wonder where you go wise sentinel, who knows somehow that days grow long, time sways and bends. You stay awhile, become our friend Then off you fly, when summer ends What becomes of one we've grown to know who holds the night, on wings composed You perch, clung to a red-tiled scope upon the ridge, the barn roof's slope in the shadow of the evening's grace a silhouette on moonlight's face You are keeper of the nightly watch a ticking clock, when midnight peaks with one eye closed to mock our sleep, the other eye revolves to keep a world in check 'till morning breaks When first the chill of autumn's call, I look for you as twilight falls But, halls of dark are lonely now Without you there, wind can't compare Oh, where, oh, where, my friend are you? For now, I see, the roof is bare When wind echoes a song tonight it calls for you, but you aren't there in silhouette against the moon
