I sit behind the computer scripting the daily lesson plan, while hoping there’s no intruder, of them I’m not an eager fan. A guest speaker comes to impart something in boring monotone. I hope he imparts something smart or I’ll be reading on my phone. A meeting scheduled noon today is for, I’m not sure what or why! The dull message makes my mind stray; for this once, I wish time would fly! My pencils are sharpened just so. The computer is securely encoded. My thoughts are ready to outflow and my brain is close to imploded. My nails are done; my hair is styled; new shoes I bought last month, or week. Addled from the hard push so wild, the harried week seems rather bleak. All tasks done as guideline bids. Today is our convocation. I don’t know about all the kids, But I need a long vacation!

It is with great excitement, one gets ready to go to school. Reading your beautiful poem I am taken back to my childhood days. As a teacher also, re opening of school was such a pleasure. I didn't mind listening to the monotone, provided I had friends with me.

I agree Valsa. I always liked school no matter which side of the desk I was on. :) Linda

"A guest speaker comes to impart something in boring monotone." - this used to be the norm when I was in school. It seems like an enthusiastic teacher was rare when I think back. I only remember three of them.

Cell phones are 'discreetly' used to pass the time now. LOL I remember four from middle-high level grades and three from university. I enjoyed being in school and teaching. Linda

Delightful! Oh the trials and tribulations of teaching (I remember them well over my 38 years of instruction). Reading this fine piece brings me memories of flight, illumination + woe. Sincerest regards, Brian

you make the excellent point i faced with a family that wanted me in teaching....i could not do such a daily grind...i honor your labor because i would miserably fail at such a profession....and the poem itself is such a wonderful limn of that profession...

Hello Timothy. I'm not sure why people choose teaching these days. It's true, there are many days off, but there are many days of work unsung as well. And, as Andrea points out, some districts employ a continuous enrollment - yikes! Linda

Teachers work long and hard it’s a fact, they deserve every vacation they have. Back to school blues won’t last, you’ll soon be happy to be back in class… Belle

This is great, Linda. An absolute classic... You've captured how so many kids feel so well about 'back to school.' What a bunch of overblown baloney sausage. How can school ever compare with summer?!

A retired teacher, I from Chicago and San Francisco. Never mind that! What counts here is your piem! So very well done,,Linda. I can tell you cared for the kids more than yourself as a “goddess” of sorts. My cousin, Madelyn was an award winning teacher in Wisconsin, who not once bragged about her awards. She was there for the children. Great teachers are like that. They love their classes. Best wishes.Yes, children need a vacation. I cried when classes graduated. Panagiota xxx

I totally get THIS one. In the school where I teach, we use "block methods" people are enrolled on a continuous basis, so I have no big vacation breaks, just one week in summer, one in fall and two for Xmas! The never ending story!!

Oh my, tough for you I'm sure. There are so many things teachers do in preparation for back-to-school days, it's not as easy as it sounds. Thanks for the visit Andrea! Linda

Children today put their faith and trust in their cellphone rather than in parents, teachers, or friends, so getting through to them is certainly a challenge! Aloha!

I can relate from many years ago, Linda. I understand teaching has become a very difficult job in some parts of the country. I hope you are doing well. Enjoyed your poem.

Thank you Milt. I've never been a teacher in public schools but many relatives have been. There are many sad and tough stories I've heard. But they love the kids! Thanks you for reading and commenting, Linda
