Automat - Hopper

Inspired by the painting Automat by Edward Hopper in 1927. The painting shows a lone woman sat at automated restaurant table. Viewing the painting will make sense of the poem. I should also add that I was inspired to write this poem by viewing Gary Radice's poem on the same painting. I appear to have toddled in a different direction though. How can loneliness dwell here Is it trapped in each compartment Insert a nickel and release the desolation Ingredients wise cherry pie Should counter it adequately But it's done nothing for me I also know the answer isn't in my coffee cup But still I sit Hopeful that something will change But there is no air coming through Nothing to change the will of my melancholy It's like I'm half in and half out No decisions made Except for cherry pie This lull is tangible I feel I've projected it Or it's projected me With light after light Hiding the way Compartments invisibly replenished 'Just a nickel to enjoy' I have a purse full of nickels That's the joke Pretty soon the bell will ring And I'll look up Destiny awaits me Somewhere Whilst I wait here Contemplating cold coffee

Hi D D! Great work. I like your approach to this. You've brought life to the subject. Have you seen a recent film about Hopper? - it cast another light on him. His wife modelled for his paintings..she was Josephine 'Jo' Nivison Hopper and the complete opposite in personality to her husband. She loved to socialise and he didn't. She was a fantastic painter in her own right and was often belittled by him. Had it not been for her Edward may not have got his break. Cheers - Gary

I haven't, I'm as new to art appreciation as I am to poetry so I'll need to play catch up. Thank you for your kind comments. There aren't that many ekphrasis on here, I only looked up the style because I was determined to breakthrough to place in Brian's contests and now I love it (but my lack of art knowledge means I have to just work through famous paintings for now)

My favorite painting... Thanks for the interpretation... Sure beats Mona Lisa, methinks.

Wonderful, although your comment got me thinking about the Mona Lisa for the next prompt! Haha a very different and strange poem emerged though :)
