At the Final Goodbye

The congregation
mingled within the silent
stone slabs of their
ancestors, a final goodbye
to yet another
destined to leave this place.
Yet to one, in this his
profound sorrow an
enchanting moment.
He craved! With a soul
sensitive and true to
touch a living memory,
his lips again to caress
her symbolic smile.
His need to glance upon
her northern eyes of blue,
stroke her flowing
“Celtic Flame”
That, while strolling in lanes
of love rebelled against
the moorland breeze.
He desired to paint this
memory of that moment
the very first day they met,
bestow in this a silent tribute
to the emotions within
their secrets, those, no one
else could ever share!

Dear Harry, how poignant yet enchanting! I adore the wistful imagery of "her northern eyes of blue" and "her flowing “Celtic Flame” and "strolling in lanes / of love rebelled against / the moorland breeze" - such a lush portrait of a woman and a love shared. Emotions so beautifully expressed, my friend. Congratulations for your excellent win in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Harry, I just read that this is your first poem posted on Poetry Soup back on 5/2/2010. What a treasure! The survivor turns his "profound sorrow" into "an enchanting moment ... this memory of that moment ~ the very first day they met" into "a silent tribute to the emotions within their secrets, those, who no one else could ever share!" Congratulations on your win on Mile 11 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 12 has already started!

So beautiful! Those last few verses poignant to me, as my dad has suffered his greatest ever loss and is in heartbreak. I love: her northern eyes of blue, stroke her flowing “Celtic Flame”

Since you read and reviewed my first poem on this site, I had to return the favor (or "favour"). This was a most enjoyable read.

Wow! What a touching, yet strongly, bravely penned paean to love, Harry! And to think that this was the first poem you posted -- 10 years ago already. Where does the time go?... An absolute pleasure to read and re-read. Thanks, Gershon

The depth of a bond so profound that time can never erase. Like you, dear Harry, I too was reluctant to post my first entry. It was my brother who finally convinced me to do so... You, my friend are a poet through and through. Elaine

What a beautiful offering this first poem is Harry. You had nothing to fear. I know poets often doubt themselves, that their creations will not measure up. I am pretty sure we have all felt like that, I know I have. Congratulations on your win! 7
