As the Crow Dies

Look down at me From thy beak Give me thou crow like stare Feed my fear With darkened glare Feathers erased by air Pages many Thy secrets held Our hubris was a trap Spells dispelled Thy wings expand In the night thee flap Moon in sky This is thy realm Dark spirits are afloat A cursed bird No friends or foe Never to sing a note Books in piles Will not be read The writers all long dead Language has passed Along with Man We didn’t listen to what was said.

Dear Richard, your verse is dark and eloquent. The sense of impending doom permeates each stanza and your last stanza is especially striking if not prophetic. I love crows and their symbolism and I adore the tone of this piece. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Language? You have me comprehinding how much of our language is Slang. Not longer Thee's or Thou's that were once with in our reach. But surely slang has something to do with it.

Eerie and foreboding but with a poignant message at the end Richard. We didn't listen. I expanded on this theme also featuring a raven in my poem Time Traveler. Wishing you an awesome week

Intriguing... it's eerie and makes one feel like disaster is coming. That last stanza really leaves one wishing they had heeded the warning. Hope you're doing well, Richard. You can take on any prompt and challenge. Hugs

I notice the futuristic tones of your poem. It's quite frightening to see such Orwellian changes to our world. I'm thankful that you wrote it and brought attention to our lost way.

Indeed it is. So much has happened in the last 6 months. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.

The title drew me in. I heard it said that crows held 'funerals' for their departed ... Also, they don't forget faces (human and crow) and form lifelong alliances or hold grudges. The raven on the other hand is more laid back, and that might be the reason why it is often referenced in symbolism. I love this cautionary tale you wove with your pen, Rick, especially the closing line. Have a great Sunday. :)

They are amazing birds. Thanks for adding your thoughts.

A sad narrative. I looked at the discription that would match the vision of this particular bird. And still I think you forgot the part It plays in horror stories.

Hello Richard, I love how you use the crow as both a symbol and a sentinel like a keeper of secrets, a judge of our hubris, a silent observer in a world that’s forgotten how to listen. The spells dispelled and wings flapping in the night it’s like you’ve conjured an entire mythology in just a few stanzas. I Love Crows. Summer Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

I like the way the poem became more mysterious in the ending verses. Great rhyming and good flow throughout the poem. A poet friend in Texas, Bill
