As I Lay Sleeping

As I lay sleeping soundly, I dreamt of keeping The home fires burning so cozy and bright, I could see the sparkling embers reflecting In her face long after the knell of midnight. A sense of peace pervades the air I breathe Wrapped in quilts sewn with cottony down, Mantle adorned with a pine-scented wreath She whispers to me softly in a flannel gown. I could lay here forever with her in my arms Blessed beyond measure on any given day, No thought of this earth’s troubles or alarms Knowing whatever befell us, we are still okay. Tomorrow I shall be thankful for all her charms When I've awakened, thoughts of her in my arms.
