Approaching Winter

Tree branches bare, the ground no longer soft The robin's song plucked from the chilly air All flowers faded, scents not borne aloft A gust of wind twirls brittle leaves nowhere The sky's a vicious shade of gray this day A hint of snow enveloped in her clouds The journey of the geese is underway To regions warmer wing they, swift and loud I too approach the coming winter's cold My loins I gird against the fierce North breeze But truth be told, I've grown a bit too old I sniffle, cough, and soon begin to wheeze... One blink, the magic glow of summer's gone The dance of love between the doe and fawn November 10, 2019 New Fall Sonnets Poetry Contest (Iambic Pentameter) Sponsor: Emile Pinet

A fabulous sonnet worthy of a poet of your stature! I know you don't write often in this style, But you have the background, wit and intelligence to do so. Hope you do more of these. All I can see is those rank gray skies of Chicago... Seeing all you described on a daily basis in winters for 34 years, got me to get out. A favorite, too Panagiota xxx

O, Panagiota! You are too nice to me, and your kind words have simply made my evening. Thank you so, so much! Warmest wishes, Gershon

wonderful sonnet for the season...you painted the scene well, i watch the geese flying south and wish it were that easy to just pick up and go and return with summer sometimes...my hummingbirds left long ago! We have seen some flutters of snow and those north winds are killer... i think we get much of your weather a day or two later... stay warm, if i could hibernate i would.... hugs

Thank you so much, Sandy, for your support and encouragement. Sonnets are the hardest poems for me to write, so it's especially uplifting to receive such a positive comment... And I guess we all better 'hunker down' over the next few days for this Arctic blast that's almost here. Here's to hibernation! Cheers, Gershon
