Angel Unaware

I saw an old man sitting by the road His coat was torn, and his cap was low It was clear he had no place to go Life had given him too heavy a load. I thought to stop and offer to share To make his life a tiny bit better Considered the apostle's simple letter Possibly to entertain angel unaware The pressure of time and place to be Overcame my sense of charity Only a moment to think of disparity Before turning my thoughts to think of me.

Simple wisdom in your elegant words, Milton! This is a universal experience so well articulated! In a song I wrote the chorus says: "I can't change the road you walk but I'll remember you in my prayers." Sometimes that is all I have and I often I forget even that! Thanksgiving blessings to you. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

Well said, walk on by, walk on by, then the conscience stabs us leaving us with thoughts of regret and a resolve to do better next time!

I'm sure most people have had the experience you describe. I know I have! Then I felt guilty--as I should have. Excellent poem! Janice
