Angel in the Storm
**didn't happen to me~~but surely COULD!
I saw white serpents dance a crooked jig
and turn the nighttime sky as bright as day.
The drizzle turned into a raging flood;
the breeze became a gale that made me sway.
I struggled as I made my way towards home,
two miles away. No one else was in sight:
no houses on this lonely stretch of road,
no drivers who might remedy my plight.
I saw the lightning striking really close
and feared my heart would jump right from my chest.
Then suddenly I saw bright lights ahead.
My prayer was to be answered. I’d be blessed.
Someone I’d never seen—have not seen since--
jumped from his car and rescued me. Since I
am deaf, I read his lips. I won’t forget
the words he signed as I began to cry:
“Put on this raincoat, Jean. I’ll take you home.
I have hot cocoa. Drink this on the way.”
If I told you I think an angel came
to rescue me that night, what would you say?
He knew my name, that I was deaf, and where
I lived. Amazed, I asked, “How do you know
these things?” He only smiled and signed, “We’re here.
Good-bye. God bless you everywhere you go.”
