"an Empty Apartment"

An empty apartment – The children were grown. Each had families and their own home. They needed her before. But now success was made sure. They were each independent. Confident. Successfully adjusted to adulthood. And very busy – She had a big house, before. But it was too big for just one person. Silence echoed through the walls. Even memories of laughter faded Time. Alone. Remembering. Change is good, sometimes. Certainly living where there are other people, Talking, walking, playing games, That is better than being alone. Right? Someone would prepare the meals. Make the bed. Do the laundry. And there would be others nearby. Many others missing children. And she would have her own apartment. An Assisted-Living-Efficiency was all she needed. She agreed that she would be fine. She was strong. Unselfish. Sacrificing. Loving. And now, she was in her new home. An empty apartment – © November 18, 2010 Dane Smith-Johnsen

It seems we raised a crowd to be alone, the new social values waste so much resources so that people can have their own space ... but who am to say that I do not love my independence ... though your poem ask, at what cost? Pretty social commentary ... straight from a poet's heart.

Sad work..People should do more visiting in these places..A lady that lives up the road said that she sits in the den awhile then in the living room and then on the front porch if weather permits...I think this woman is so lonely and I will go see her then I started having all these problems with my back then the Myelogram and now my foot and ankle...She has gone to her daughters for a while now ..I am glad that you wrote thie one. Maybe it will stimulate someone to visit the lonely..Sara

Ah...so sad! Nobody should ever be alone! We should learn to take time for our elderly parents and grandparents while they are still alive, for one day they will be gone forever!!
