i remember you; giddy little child with the mona-lisa smile and sun-burnt hair as it brushed against your ivory skin you were so innocent then i never saw the sadness that lingered in your eyes the depths of green seemed to pull others in that hypnotizing glare hid your pain well they laughed with you yet in silence you cried muffled voice echoed on walls where darkness subdued your soul i heard you sold your soul on the corner of fifth and main for a small bag of pleasure to escape the pain momentarily again a lonely cat cried by your side he has nine lives you've already had ten yet there you go again unafraid, stained with your own blood the band still wrapped tight against your flesh needle tip still feeding your veins as you close your eyes and rest in shallow breaths i remember you; still as the air that august day that sunlit hair against grey skin blue lips without smile closed eyes pulling others in to the depths of your pain their cheeks stained with tears that bore your name as muffled cries echoed by your grave June 28, 2019 First Place Best free verse 2019 Poetry Contest Sponsored by John Hamilton Copyright © Sandra Adams | Year Posted 2019

I have tears reading the poem Sandra, im sure others can relate to 'if only' it's so hard to come to terms with this tragic loss but i guess the grip of addiction is so strong and many turn to drugs to cope with other demons in their life. Adding this to my faves for so many reasons:-) hugs Jan xx

I am at a loss for words...sad, life is so precious and fragile. If only...pops into my mind. Your poem is wonderfully crafted like all of your work but it is so sad this one needed to be written.

Remember her as the child, my friend...always. Sad when a momentary escape is our last moment ~ a poignant poem speaking volumes of our ignorance as a human species...so sorry for your loss. Congrats on the win...

thank you so much my friend, she was in my son's wedding two years ago, she took selfies with everyone... no one knew the importance of them until she became a memory... so sad to see so many fall...countless children i have known through the years, that i have watched grow and then saw fall... sad is this world we live in now... hugs

Sandra, Not easy to read..,harder to write I'm sure. So sad to lose someone, perhaps sadder to be the ones left behind? Left to pick up the pieces and go...on. -Richard

First time, i've read this amazing dedication. Not often, does reading a poem, take my breath away, like this did. In Fact this penned poem of despair highlights so much regarding our world today, and should be made available to the media, to have it's message broadcast for all.

Stunning. To find beauty in such a horrific event is no small feat. Still the loss of a young life is a tragedy. I fear she was too fragile too beautiful for the ugly world surrounds some as delicate & precious as her. Excellent poetry. A Fav.
