A Study of Ants
All morning lying belly flat like a child
I felt the earth against my flesh
And in this position sweet all the while
I watched the ants in a solid line
Streaming upward from their far place
What summoned them to climb
To join the trek and hold a ranked pace?
Theories abound, I'll have none
For their are things beyond facts we see
The finite is an infinite galaxy
And in the known is still a maze of mystery
The wall of time will not explain.
There is a scent of sugar, a sniff of fat
The little wands sensing air may feel
But something cryptic, and beyond all that
Marshall these ants to explore.
I break the long line and study the detour
They sniff the lame and dead
Something is said, I know nothing more
New strategies are supplied so fast
Yet more as another alien part of me
I study these things to find
My forgotten self, my long lost memory
And inexplicable peace of mind.
