A Rescue

She knew that this man
smelling of fire and danger
had rescued them
from a terrible fate

and to show her gratitude
she transverse the rubble and
took advantage of the opportunity
to thank him by licking his face

and as she nuzzled close to that
dirty tear stained face
the fireman stroked her softly
and they were
for a moment in time
man and his best friend
together sublime

and even though all around the noise
of the cries and the shouts were heard
even through this din
both hearts were beating
with the love of each other within.
