A Quiet Visit
I smile remembering this small white house
surrounded by the ordinary things--
a neat, green yard and stately cedar trees,
a narrow gravel drive, the birds of spring.
Its most impressive feature was the swing,
now empty, faded, creaking in the wind.
The couple who once sat here side by side
reached out to me, and I became their friend.
I can't rest in a swing no longer safe.
I'm satisfied to stand and reminisce
about the time when I, a restless youth,
was mentored by a couple I so miss.
