"Sam Dumpty here for National Geoplastic Magazine. I am surrounded by the most prominent scientists and archeologists in the world. The occasion? The unveiling of the de-extincted wooly mammoth. To say that the level of excitement is to the moon and back would be an understatement. All have been briefed as to the science involved in resurrecting this ancient beast. In layman's terms, modern elephant DNA has been fused with well-preserved DNA from a wooly mammoth that had been frozen in time, thanks to a catastrophic and rather sudden ice age event. Ever since the dire wolf reappeared on the scene as a result of gene editing by scientists using CRISPR technology, the race has been on to bring back the wooly mammoth as well as the Tasmanian tiger. In a moment, all tuned in will see science at its apex in the form of a two-hundred pound wooly mammoth calf." "Attention attendees:(ahem) The moment the world has been anxiously awaiting has now arrived. This unique triumph, whom we have affectionately named Eve, is ready to make her debut. Are you ready?" "Dumpty here. For the first time in my life, I have a genuine tear streaming down my shell. Eve is the most amazing creature ever witnessed by human (and ovum) eyes. We have been forbidden to touch the creature, but our close proximity allows us to get a detailed view of the sheer magnificence of her. Not as much hair as you might expect and the tusks are a bit smaller than photos I've seen, but then I suppose that is to be expected of a hybrid between elephant and mammoth. As you can hear folks, there is a great deal of oohing and aahing over Eve. But as I watch the spectacle unfold, there is something that feels a bit off, something odd. As I peer deep into the beast's eyes I sense a coldness, a lifelessness. No one else is talking about the phenomenon, so maybe it's just a figment of my overactive imagination. Still, my gut is telling me this is wrong. She clearly does not want to be here. I was as thrilled as the rest to witness this monumental event. But in some way that I can't explain, her spirit reached out to me, touched me to my yolk. My God, what have we done? And what will this new creation bode for Earth's future? For now, this is National Geoplastic reporter Sam Dumpty, signing off." * contest sample ** Sam Dumpty is a character I created years ago and is older brother to Humpty. He wears many hats, including detective and reporter.

Hi Tom, love this creative write. From beginning to end, you had me hooked. You start to truly think as you read, "Would they really try this if they could. I wouldn't put it by scientists. Sometimes this kind of writing can make you think. I always believe in letting that which is gone, be gone. Thought provoking write, Tom. Your friend always ..... Mike.

Creative and well thought out thoughts penned in this one. Thanks for sharing this one with us. It seems like there was cloning of sheep and that did not work out so well if I remember correctly. Sara K

Dolly the sheep. She actually did quite well. Still, seems presumptuous to me

Thank you for sharing Sam Dumpty ,older brother to Humpty, as to who is even one iota more correct than the other is clearly within doubt, but I think your last 2 questions to us your readers are most pertinent. "My God, what have we done? And what will this new creature bode for Earth's future? A chilly thought to bring poor Eve back, especially as she secretly spoke to your inner self 'she clearly doesn't want to be here' what a scary thought, to therefore bring her back! All a little muddled however enjoyable! Hugs,Jennifer.

Tom, you’ve done it again--Sam Dumpty’s voice is pitch-perfect, mixing wit with genuine unease in that final moment. What starts as a lighthearted marvel turns chilling with “touched me to my yolk”--loved that line! The shift in tone was subtle and masterful. Poor Eve… poor future.

Doesn't seem like a very good idea to bring back a cold resistant cousin of the elephant into a world where the ice caps are melting, maybe they should make a heat-resistant one? No, I think they would be smarter to leave well enough alone! Where will they stop? Scary stuff. I felt so sorry for Eve, how sad, her eyes. Imagine being re-introed into a world full of aliens and not a single left of one's own kind nor climate, gives me the chills even though it is a hot day!! Very well written!

The DNA of extinct animals can only be approximated, not reproduced. 98% of animal life is extinct. Some is due to man's recklessness but most due to natural selection, Enjoyed your satiric narrative--very clever, a lot of bite. Eric Idol would proud. Sorry about Humpty. Robert

Hello Tom, I love your take on the awe and unease surrounding the de-extinction of the woolly mammoth. The science is real-CRISPR gene editing and preserved DNA are making “cold-resistant elephant-mammoth hybrids” possible. My daughter, who is a NICU nurse, and I were talking about how they currently can take a single hair strand and create DNA, eggs, and sperm from one life and create new life. Scary!! Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

This is brilliant not sure I remember Sam. The playful tone of 'Sam Dumpty' and the satirical setting of 'National Geoplastic Magazine' give this narrative a sense of wonder, which is slowly unraveled by an undercurrent of unease. The juxtaposition of scientific triumph with the quiet despair in Eve’s eyes is masterfully done. That final shift from awe to moral reckoning is chilling. 'My God, what have we done?' hits like a gut punch. This isn't just speculative fiction it's a mirror held up to our obsession with progress, no matter the cost. A powerful piece that lingers. You have highlighted what a wonderful writer you are here.

EDIT: Para. 3 - Line: 5 ~ 'Not as much hair [h] as you might expect'. ~ Fun and disturbing. Good reminder of our collective responsibility to govern intelligently those science practitioners wisely.

Dear Tommy, you’ve set up a compelling moral dilemma: in our rush to resurrect the past, have we condemned this creature to a fate it never asked for? And what consequences will ripple through the ecosystem and through human conscience? That final line—“What have we done? And what will this new creation bode for Earth’s future?”—lingers long after the story ends. What a profound write...Hugs

Dear Tom, the Zombie Apocalypse will soon be underway. Jurassic Park, Frankenweenie, and Pet Cemetery have taught no lessons. I had wonderful fun reading this one aloud to my husband. I have nothing against Science. It is a tool, a gift even. It is the character of the tool handlers that most concerns me. What is the end goal here? Sam Dumpty ;)

When Science ventures into recreating extinct beings, it is a moment of triumph and excitement. But the question arises- are they fit to live in the present environment? Will technology be able to infuse the spirit of true life into them? Can man take upon himself the sacred task of creation? These are all ethical questions that can prop up. What you suspected may be true... there must be a kind of coldness and lifelessness in them. Great imagination. Tom.
