A Humorous View of Contests

Ah, dear poet, each poem must not necessarily in a contest be! Annoying to read beauteous words. And then.....suddenly... At the bottom, stamped coldly, like the bottom of a milk carton! “Entered in Melanie Moo Cows, Contest, How Green was My Valley” This drives me mad, I go crying in my dark alley! For I imagine Shakespeare, bearded, by candlelight, Penning “Romeo and Juliet” and being certain to fit all contest rules and fit all lines to be totally right or..contest uptight? This is strictly my humorous opinion and I did enter two. But for me, being in contests, is a thing I heartily eschew. I do not want to be Number One nor to place? Poetry for me, I say, that this art will never be comparable to a horse race! To be a judge??I have no degree in English literature! Especially, in the classics! But maybe, if I pretend, I will wake up tomorrow, and have been given one in the starry night’s magic!

Everyone sees life through their own filters. Take what a look at a lot and keep what brings joy to your soul. Free speech means you may state your thoughts freely, on the soup, poetically, which you have done. Bill

Thanks, Bill. Tis so true. We are like children, in the sense we find joy....in the games we enjoy the most. Some, like me, get completion out of writing., period.no kidding. Others like the Contests. Some spend more time commenting...as a non typist, I am slow, for sure. a limitation! But you will find both myself and soul in each poem.. I am not here to please or be top, best, Just be whole, and honest. Above all, to learn poetry. It’s a long process. Enjoyable to the max. Pangie

Contests simply serve as triggers to my muse, Pangie, win or not doesn't matter... I just like the challenge :)

As Jeff said, I also use the contests as "the apple on string" to tempt the muse to pull an unwanted load.....I didn't expect to win every racquetball game I played but I still played every point as hard as I could.

Great point John. The game for me is creating a poem. I have enough poems to make a book. So My play is writing. Mo Muse, no contests. Music stirs me, current events, life death, lovers, family and Tributes Whatever floats your poetry boat. I was never in competitive sports, John. Your input, greatly appreciated. Pangie

Ha! Fair point, Pangie. I will say this, I have written some poems that I never would have written had I not been doing so for the "contest". I have come to view these more as "challenges" or "puzzles", sort of like wordle, but I guess you're right, they don't actually need to be entered to do that. Take care! -jeff

My example of Shakespeare was good, I thought or any poet you like. A poem came from you.you can put it on many sites To win and keep trying. Sites have contests to encourage ..I encourage myself. You can see how many pages there are...on my site. I have been here two years. As a non typist...as one who loves life. 12 hrs at PS is enough. I like your approach...makes sense, Jeff. Thank you for coming back.....Pangie.
