The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart. -Helen Keller(1880-1968)

Helen Keller's story has always fascinated me, and how a woman also nearly blind came into her life as her teacher when Helen was 6 was the thing that changed Helen's life forever. Together Helen and her teacher Anne Sullivan lived for the rest of their lives as Helen attended college and even used her voice to give lectures around the world on behalf of the deaf and blind. If you get a chance to watch "The Miracle Worker" you should see it on Youtube. The 60's version won Best Picture.

“Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbour was. "Light! give me light!" was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.”

Helen Keller, The Story of My Life

__________________________________________________________

When Helen Keller was a child, both deaf and blind, she acted wild until her heart was helped to melt. Seen or not, beauty must be felt. Sweet sights and sounds she knew not of. She barely comprehended love. In youth, a bad hand she’d been dealt. Seen or not, beauty must be felt. A favored doll, dear Helen clutched, yet things were nameless that she touched. Words on her hand a teacher spelt. Seen or not, beauty must be felt. One day the young girl’s whole world turned. Her heart perceived the words she’d learned. With joy thereafter Helen dwelt. Seen or not, beauty must be felt. June 19, 2023

Helen Keller has inspired hordes of men ! Her teacher Sullivan should be a model for all teachers. As a child I was inspired by the example of Helen and her teacher. You have allowed Helen to be reborn in my mind through your poem. Thanks Andrea. All the Best!

A beautiful and poignant story that touches the heart of everyone who hears it or reads about it. The only one who could reach her and teach her was sent to her by God Himself. Wonderful Andrea. God Bless, JB

This is wonderful to read Andrea. I love her quote how smart was she to relate the fog without seeing and the boat. She truly was gifted beyond what anyone can fathom. This is a favorite...

A miracle story was the life of Helen Keller. She didn't let her perceived handicap became a blessing to the world because of the love of a teacher. Your poem was very touching and touched my heart, Andrea. A FAV seems so little for the joy it brought me. Thanks for sharing your talent with us through your lovely poetry my dear friend. Love, Bill

I've watched her story and it's so touching, Andrea, sometimes I feel incompetent when compared to such people who overcome their challenges and go on to become great...

Hellen Keller had a great teacher. I am not sure I saw her film. A brilliant woman who managed to make the deaf and blind understand things and even graduate. Your poem is brilliant.

This is so well written and rhymed, and the notes helped with context. The Miracle Worker was amazing...how those two acted their parts so well is hard to believe.
