A Gnarly Oak

A gnarly oak
resembling
the Gorgon
Medusa;
sends serpentine roots
twisting and squirming,
into the dank
forest floor.
Its skeletal limbs
seem to claw their way
out of a fog bank;
bony fingers
dripping droplets
of morning dew
onto the dry leaves
scattered beneath
its barren branches.
As Autumn breezes
blow away
the foggy fabric
draped over
mossy boughs;
twigs poke through
Dawn's sullied shroud;
freeing this
ancient Goliath
from its cocoon
of misty white.
