I needed, craved, and desired you very much; I loved the feel of you going down, Over the years, you were a constant crutch. With you, I loved to paint the town. You gave me the courage to speak my mind, With you, I could escape my harsh reality. I thought you were real and one of a kind, But you were an illusion, your specialty. Why didn't you tell me that you were a fake? And your whole purpose was to rob and take. You took my health, family, and my job, I was left by myself just to sit and sob. I turned to you because I was hurt and in much pain, All I wanted was shelter from the pouring rain. You are no longer a friend in my corner, If you stayed, I would be visiting the coroner. Although I am free of your vices today I struggle, and I am only one DRINK away…….. From RELAPSE and I value my SOBRIETY, it happens to be a top priority. I trust in God every day that I don't slip back into my ADDICTION, But it is going to take prayer, 12 steps, a support system, and dedication. 12-22-2020 Contest: Addiction Sponsor: Rob Levasseur N/A Submitted to be N/A 2020 Contest Sponsor: John Hamilton Placed 3rd

Wow. This is a inside look into this dilemma! I really am proud of you and your courage in writing about it. If this is true that is as sometimes poets use a muse or write from their imagination. I feel this poem could help others in the struggle. So it is obvious why it won potd honor. Well done! Sorry it took me scrolling to find.

One day at a time, my friend. You have taken the right steps and have a healthy respect for the power of the bottle. I hope it was cathartic to write this, and I know it may be just the words someone else needs to read to be encouraged by your story. A wonderful choice for POTD, you have my hearty congratulations. Happy new year, Alexis ~ John

I would like to thank everyone who congratulated me for getting the poem of the day. This is personal, and it's more than a contest. And something I struggle with every day. But with a strong support system, I can walk in my sobriety one step at a time. I would like to wish you all Merry Christmas! Stay safe and well:-)Alexis

You are a very courageous woman! There are six types of courage and you demonstrated two of them with this poem, putting yourself out there. You have the moral and emotional courage. Happy Holidays!!!

Congratulations on your potd win. A great story/write. I do not understand what happens to some friends, they were just not friends from the start. True friends are few in life. I love your line, "I trust in God every day that a I don't slip." Yes, trust in God every day. Enjoy your win with blessings.........................
