A Congressman
A Congressman
A congressman, his face crunched in fear,
claimed God had whispered in his ear:
“Apply Isaiah’s words, then quickly select
men reasonable, mild and circumspect,
but please, under no condition they be
of the Democratic or Republican party
for men of that sort, at least in my eyes,
prefer discord to peace or compromise.
They may claim to live by my morality,
but don’t be fooled, it’s rank hypocrisy.
Men of that sort have no place in Congress;
it’s why your country’s in such distress.
I am a God of reason, peace and wisdom.
Do as I command and see that it’s done.”
Trembling, the congressman said: But Lord,
will they believe me, much less your word?
“Have faith in me,” said God, “I’m true and real,
not human; what I say I will in time reveal.
And at a time and by a means that’s right –
through fed-up voters on election night.
