Times Change

Dusty little towns West of the Great Divide Where great-grandchildren of cowboys On ranches still reside. Small western museums With local antiquities inside; Native American artifacts, Some horse tack for a cowboy's ride. There among the fancy Are two dresses hemmed above the knee, 20's Jazz Age fashion Worn far from the speak-easys. Caused a bit of an uproar, As they danced on the sawdust floor. Who were these rebel cowgirls, These flappers from western lore.

Try visiting a museum. You learn a lot.

You create a nice picture. It reminds me of my grandfather, who was orphaned, and grew up on a ranch in Arizona. He was still dressing like a cowboy in the 1960s here in California.

Once a cowboys, always a cowboys. I feel bad for your grandfather because of his life as an orphan. I hope his life during his adult years, was happy.

We witness spectacular changes as time passes. Those who break old culture and mores will be branded as rebels. Cowboy culture and their ranch life are quite interesting. Well written dear Hilda.

What an interesting read! I had never heard the term ‘flappers’ before - I honestly thought you were referring to their dresswear :) so I just had to look the term up: “ Flappers were young women in the 1920s who embraced a more modern, liberated lifestyle and challenged traditional societal norms. They were known for their short skirts, bobbed hair, jazz music, and enjoyment of alcohol and dancing. Flappers also embraced greater sexual freedom and challenged the Victorian morality of their parents.” Cheers (or should that be yee-haw?) Gary

Flappers were known for their clothes and dancing the new styles to new music. But I'll check with the museum and see if they knew who these girls were. The dresses may have been a lark. The dresses are still inappropriate in a religious community, which this town is.

Joan of Arc, Annie Oakley comes to mind -- they did their own things, and could compete with the best. Wonderful write. My wife grew up on a farm. Did square dancing on a horse. Hunted with her 22 at twelve. Wore pants when expected to wear dresses.

I absolutely loved this, from the dusty roots of the old West to the sparkle of Jazz Age rebellion! The imagery of flapper dresses hemmed above the knee “dancing on the sawdust floor” is so vivid and full of life. You’ve captured a delightful moment where tradition meets transformation, and it reads like a folk song wrapped in history. Beautifully told! Warmly, Alesia
