24 Seconds of Silence, For Kobe

24 seconds of silence for (Kobe Bryant) Twenty four seconds of silence, seems like forever, and yet seems so short. Just like Kobe's journey in life, so much accomplished and yet, cut off in death tragically. Kobe was known for his aggressive competitive spirit, the so called Mamba mentality. Most admired him, some revered him, others were put off by his appeared, aloof demeanor. Kobe had a way of conquering any adversity or challenge, that stood in the way of greatness. But, in the end... not even Kobe could defeat, the undefeated enemy... our common enemy... death. A death so sudden and tragic, that is for many, unfathomable... incomprehensible... but unfortunately true. Kobe's death is a grim reminder that no matter how accomplished, how great, how famous, how wealthy a person is... he is... was... he...and all of us are still only human... with our talents, deficiencies, foibles... and yes, even our sins... that is what makes us human. No human can escape the inevitability of death. It (death) is the unquestioned champion, with no rival (human) that can conquer it! Death can come suddenly... tragically... like in Kobe's case. Death can be slow, and painful... unrelenting... until it achieves it's goal. Some have said "it was Kobe's time to go" "his time was up" "God took him to play basketball in heaven". I'm sorry.... I know many people... perhaps even you... believe these things. Perhaps thinking this way gives some solace... or... relief from the grief. but... thinking about it... does it not paint God as cruel... vindictive and tyrannical? How can a God of love do such things? The fact is he doesn't. (See my poem It is not God's will for further explanation and reasoning.) Kobe and so many others fall victim, not to a predetermined fate... but rather, what the Bible calls "time and unexpected events" (see Ecclesiastes 9:11,12) I have to defend God, because, when there are tragedies, even so called,"acts of God" natural disasters, these are not caused by God. Instead of causing grief... God brings relief and comfort. We can look forward to the time, when all those in the grave will be resurrected back to life, here on earth, to enjoy life again with their loved ones. (see Acts 24:15; Job 14:14,15) (I know most if not all of you believe in an instant heavenly reward for those who die. I know that brings you some comfort and solace... I'm merely showing the Bibles teaching on the matter, and I believe that there is more comfort, more solace in knowing that our loved ones will be resurrected back to life on earth again.) I don't know if this is the proper place to discuss here... but as far as your more philosophical arguments on how to attribute (or not attribute) the bad things that happen in this world ... to God. It is my understanding that God controls all of creation: the storms, the tornadoes, and other things that might be unpleasant for us (or beneficial depending on the circumstance). All of it is caused by God and for His purposes (not all of which is known to us in the immediate present).

I've never been much of a sports fan, so I never really had an opinion (good or bad) towards Kobe. I do know his passing really hit home for a lot of people ... and that's sad. You penned a really heartfelt down-to-earth monologue about the realities of us humans, John. And, yes, while it is a common believe -whether Christian or not- that heaven is an instantaneous thing that you acquire, that's not the picture that the Bible paints: it is, like you say, a Resurrection at the Last Days!

I haven't been the biggest Kobe fan, though he was certainly one of the best ever and a joy to watch. That said, I think he turned his life around and worked to do good, in the last few years especially. Everyone is due forgiveness and grace, and it is not up to us mortals to judge, as "all fall short of the glory", (me, most of all). You have summed it up quite well here, John - excellent write.

So sad indeed, that this happened. No one knows when that appointment will be- when death takes them, only God knows. We must always be ready. Spiritually speaking. Your thoughts caress gently around me. ~ Brandy

John, they say the good die young which is certainly the case in Kobe and his lovely daughter's case. This is a lovely tribute to a great and talented man. He will not be forgotten. xxoo

You could create a debate on this...but I'm not one to debate on religious issues...Nice tribute to a super star who is no longer with us.

Thanks SO, I don't debate religion either, I merely show another option to conventional views on death and the afterlife, people are free to choose what they believe, I think it's good to have all the options available to make a wise choice. I appreciate your kind words and always enjoy your visits!

What a heart touching tribute to Kobe...he was a local boy...my kids played basketball against him...he has done many things to give back to his school and less fortunate... it's sad how he and all the others died...no one will really know what happened, one cannot blame God, he doesn't do evil things, just welcome those that pass into his kingdom...death eventually comes to all of us, one never knows how, when, where it will happen, only that it will happen... love this John, excellent penning... hugs

It was a sad day for many and I am sure many questions as to why have been running through many minds. Things happen, life happens and death happens, none of us are immune to it. Your tribute was amazing John, so filled with deep emotions and feelings. You should be proud of this

Thanks Chris I'm glad you see the point, I tried to see what could be learned from such a tragedy, and to show where true comfort lies. I appreciate your support!

I only know about him what's in the public eye-- and no doubt he accomplished much in a short life. My compliments to you for the tribute you wrote, John. I struggle, as most do, to explain why such tragedies happen--without any success. Thankfully, we all seek solace in something we believe in.

Thanks Vijay for your thoughtful words, it's true we all seek solace in what we believe, it gets us through these tragedies and through life in general.
