1st place in the contest
The conductor has blown his whistle
That sound brings back memories,
which I had forgotten a long time ago
The local train was then the connecting link
between the village and the city
The differences between the rich and the poor were obvious
I could smell the expensive perfume
Oh my ... where they embroidered ...
they belonged to the circle of educated ladies
The man with his tailored coat
winked at me as he turned the page of the newspaper
I had just turned 18, dressed in mine
Sunday clothes and my mother's red hat
My stomach felt as a spinning wheel of fortune
An unknown city, a new community to make a living
Women, especially young girls, was still
of minor importance - compared to men
The journey took three hours, no money for a seat
drained all my savings
Train travel was an investment, back in 1943
