Christmas Poems New or Old Poetry Contest

2nd place in the contest

Christmas is just around the corner
   convulsions in the stomach region
Poor elves who create all the toys
   and Santa takes the credit

   Squeezing me into the bus
   to the nearest shopping mall
Puts the body into fight or flight mode
   Burn some money
   Christmas music in the background
Speakers spewing out the traditional carols
   over and over again

   My brother needs a padlock
Wrapped in white soft toilet paper
   Christmas offering:
   An electric nose hair trimmer
   ... embarrassing
   Symbolic gifts
The goal is not to be entertaining,
   but the demand is rising

   Christmas stress reaches undiscovered heights
   Hormones flood the bloodstream
Writhes on the floor with stomach aches
   interprets the pain positively
Hear the angels sing messages of peace
with charisma and glimmers in the eyes
December is full of forced cuddling

The stockings are hanging by the fireplace
   Chaos with festive cheer
   Merry Christmas

Anne-Lise, you describe the competing interests with such skill and flair. It's not easy to make sense out of it all, and you give us a lot to think about. Hope Christmas shopping and your experience of the holiday all goes well. It's almost over, but then it will all start anew a bit earlier than expected next year. Smiles!!

Christmas is undoubtedly a time of cheer. But it also brings in its wake some tensions of making elaborate preparations and tedious shopping. Congratulations on your great win, dear Anne. love and hugs.

truths are as barbed as you say dear poet. 'forced cuddling' -even the leaders of nations do.. I appreciate the tone of your verse dear poet. Congratulations on your win. Happy Christmas, Cheers (true hugs from a fan poet friend)

I love Christmas but not all the razza matazz that is thrust in your face. 24/7. Won't be long before chocolate eggs are in the shops lol. Congratulations on your placement Anne Lise. If you've got any spare snow, send it over. Tom

Being an old man, I only follow the commercial part of the Christmas holidays. My young grandkids love the gifts, that makes me very happy.

Christmas has become so commercialized and yet I feel I am on the guilty list, but only for family make notes of what they like or need during the year,oh, and of couse my haidresser and her apprentice, the neighbor, our domestic helper, the gardener, but my litte darling grand-daughter at two years old, loves books,so thats easy. Love Christmas, the obvious faith in the meaning of the word, but also the glitter. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer. PS i enjoyed your poem my friend, good luck in the contest.

- When Christmas starts as early as they do in the stores, you're pretty bored with the whole Christmas thing when it comes, Jan :) - hugs

Christmas is certainly not what it used to be Anne-Lise, many now dread it, we've had it on the TV and in the shops since October. Money. Money money is what it's all about now. Good luck in the contest. Tom
