Forbidden Door

I opened the door
the door that led to the living room
she was sitting on the same couch
my two brothers standing beside
jealously vying for her affection
little sister sitting on daddy’s lap

so peaceful, so serene
the fireplace crackling
spitting sparks…
all was as it should be
as it should have been
so very long ago…

from the edge of vision
that other door, forbidden
don’t open that door, daddy warned
something’s in there, daddy warned
little sister was squirming, sweating
she screamed...

opened that door…
someone, something appeared
something appeared at that door
looked back for my daddy
the living room empty, vacant
frozen fireplace
cobwebs in corners
I screamed…
