Water Dragons

The roll of the waves hides the arcs of their backs.
The shoal of porpoises are feeding on squid.
Feasting amongst them on cephalopod snacks
Are green-scaled dragons that choose to be hid.

They hide from whalers and their brutal harpoons,
While they stay in the ocean for most of life's times,
Except times when they roam the nearby sand dunes
To covet Marsh Radishes and the wild limes.

These dragons don't fly, since they're aquatic sorts.
Like Nessie in Scotland, they wish to be free.
Some people catch a glimpse, and some hear a snort,
But rarely, since mostly they're way out to sea.

So they learned their lessons and rarely show their scales. Except times when they roam the nearby sand dunes To covet Marsh Radishes and the wild limes.

You have brought the marine life with all its variety! Sea creatures are amazingly varied! Some of them cannot be sighted as they live deep down the ocean bed. Lovely poem, dear Hilda !

Enchanting, fantastical dimension to sea-world you have created. I doubt that I will ever sit on the shore, and look out on the ocean again without a camera nearby, wanting to be first. Enjoyed this work very much. Blessings.

Dear Hilda, your captivating poem is beautifully expressed. Your fantastic imagery creates a mythical, mystical creature "The roll of the waves hides the arcs of their backs" and "They hide from whalers and their brutal harpoons" and "Some people catch a glimpse, and some hear a snort" - let's hope they always stay out to sea where they can be hidden yet free. Wonderful whimsical poetry! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thank you. Your generous comments lift my spirits. I hoped to change the dragon in this poem from a fire breathing menace to something more approachable. I'll eventually write a bad dragon, but not today.

I really enjoyed this poem Hilda. Great rhyme scheme. I think my favorite line is "To covet Marsh Radishes and the wild limes." Nessie is the Loch Ness I'm guessing.

Thank you. Yes, I did spice it up a bit with the reference to Loch Ness. Should I hang my head in shame? It is Chinese Year of the Dragon, so I hope to connect with this year.

Oh wow, this is such a profound poem from your elegant quill, beautiful Hilda..I love the theme and how wonderfully you've made your lines stand above, by giving them an intricate artistic touch..Perfectly crafted imagery with impeccable phrases and especially, I enjoyed reading this because I'm an admirer of fantasy writes, so this one is absolutely mystical to read. I remember as a kid I used to write many short stories too, your piece made me reminisce those days :) sending best wishes & love

Thank you for reading. I think most poems have an element of fantasy. Simply written, like the Red Diamond, I'm thinking of putting some of these in a children's book of poems.

Ah beautiful poem this is dear hilda! As always a unique concept again, and something that flows in such a lyrical manner, i love the uniqueness of your diction and how you’ve phrased too. I love dragon stories especially, have read few in the past. And your poem here is inspiring me to write another: sending you light always . And yes it is the year of dragons and chinese new year just passed. Perfect timing for the poem too.

Dragons are as real as they have been in the past. Thank you for your comment. (Dragons are similar to alligators, so more like reptiles.)

Dear Hilda, The imagery in the first verse is stunning - the hidden dragons feasting among the porpoises, their green scales glimpsed beneath the rolling waves. It's like finding a secret world within our own. I love the contrast between these mythical creatures and their down-to-earth cravings for marsh radishes and limes. It makes them feel both fantastical and oddly relatable. The poem beautifully leaves us wondering about these elusive creatures, sparking our imaginations. Hilda, this is a poem that will stay with me long after reading it. - Blessings, Daniel
