Poems

Valentine

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.

Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

Wedding Toast

St. John tells how, at Cana's wedding feast,
The water-pots poured wine in such amount
That by his sober count
There were a hundred gallons at the least.

It made no earthly sense, unless to show
How whatsoever love elects to bless
Brims to a sweet excess
That can without depletion overflow.

Which is to say that what love sees is true;
That this world's fullness is not made but found.
Life hungers to abound
And pour its plenty out for such as you.

Now, if your loves will lend an ear to mine,
I toast you both, good son and dear new daughter.
May you not lack for water,
And may that water smack of Cana's wine.

Soldier Boy

My soldier boy has crossed the sea
 To fight the foeman;
But he'll come back to make of me
 And honest woman.
So I am singing all day long,
 Despite blood-shedding;
For though I know he's done me wrong,
 We'll end by wedding.

My soldier boy is home again,
 So bold and scathless;
But oh, my heart is numb with pain
 Because he's faithless.
He's brought with him a French Mam'selle;
 They plan a marriage;
Maybe I'll go - no one will know
 Of my miscarriage.

My soldier boy has made his choice,
 She'll hold him to it;
I tell myself that I rejoice,
 May he not rue it.
But oh, that starry month of May,
 Love-words wild spoken!
I stand alone and make no moan . . .
 My heart is broken.

I Shall Not Burn

I have done with love and lust,
 I reck not for gold or fame;
I await familiar dust
 These frail fingers to reclaim:
Not for me the tiger flame.

Not for me the furnace glow,
 Rage of fire and ashen doom;
To sweet earth my bones bestow
 Where above a lowly tomb
 January roses bloom.

Fools and fools and fools are you
 Who your dears to fires confide;
Give to Mother Earth her due:
Flesh may waste but bone will bide,--
Let loved ones lie side by side.

Let God's Acre ever dream;
 Shed your tears and blossoms bring;
On age-burnished bone will gleam
 Crucifix and wedding ring:
 Graves are for sweet comforting.

Curst be those who my remains
Hurl to horror of the flames!

For the One I Love

My heart is small
but my love is great
My head cant fathom this debate
Of why i love you
and how much i do

But understand this i do
I would even say more than words do
because words cant explain
how beautiful are your eyes
when they shine like fire

And the feelings i get when i see you
make me want to be with you my whole life through
and when we before God all mighty say I do
Because now and for ever i love you

Will You Wear My Ring

Will you wear my ring
you know what that means
I love you
for the rest of my life
just say you'll be my wife
it tells the world
how much I love you
and I know you already do
will you wear my ring
it's a perfect understanding
we can love each other
forever
never apart
from one another's heart
it means everything
will you wear my ring

If

If I held you close would you mind?

If I said to love me a minute longer would you have time?

If I said to kiss me would i feel that you care?

If I looked at you for hours would you mind that I stared?

If forever is what i wanted would you promise to be true?

If I told you would you believe me If I said I love you?

If all these things I ask of you, you tell me you can do?

Then theres one more question that I have for you .....Is your answer I do?

I Love you booby

My heart is filled with happiness

When youre lips were made to kiss

Passing day I long for thee

Here's a flower for you to keep

A Hummingbird you are to me

Show me love and let me see

I cried today and sob for soy

Let this day be made of joy

My heart to you is yours to keep

Julio To Marylyn!!

I love just the way you are

I don't want you to change
your life for me.

Just wait a while, and soon
you'll see.

I love you for more than
what you are,

I love you for what you've done
by far.

You've changed my life
in many ways,

And brightened every one
of my days.

I don't want you to think
that you're nothing,

Because in my heart you're
definately something.

More than something
actually,

My baby and maybe
soon to be.

Please stay the way you are,
it's perfectly fine.

Sorry it's taking so long
to call you mine.

Joyful Years

Love is all I feel,
With every passing day,
Each time that our lips seal,
I give my heart away.

In words I say "I love you",
And my heart feels the same,
With my soul I'll say "I do",
I know this is not a game.

Life is very wonderful,
He is always near,
The rest of my years will be joyful,
Because he will be right here.

Joy of You

It is a gift to be next to you in...
The morning's light you are adorning and delighting
No fighting here because...
we are eye to eye as one...
one half and one half completes the love of you and...
Moi ...mine is yours
yours is mine...
My heart is yours to shower or shatter
Embrasses or embrace

it is all of you showing me the joy..
Of you I love you
For the rest of my life want to be as your wife
As doves fly i will do all i can be to there in good and bad skies

The Wedding Ring

This ring means much to me,
Much more than my own finger.
The love in this wedding ring,
Will always and forever linger.
I love you more than myself,
I love you with all my heart.
I love you more than life itself,
I wish that we would never be apart.
The Great evergreen
Best represents our love,
Summer, winter, spring, and fall.
The only thing to stop us,
Is the great God above.
This ring is strong,
For it, I would lose my ring finger.
I'd wear it around my neck,
For the love, will always, and forever linger.

I Love You

What do I mean when I say this to you?
It means I wish I could find the words,
To tell you what your love does for my life.
It means that no matter what happens,
You’ll always be my one and only.
It means that when I’m confused and lonely,
I look to you for help and comfort.
It means you’re my best friend.
It means I know you’re not perfect,
And I don’t expect you to be.
It means when I look at you,
It’s my happiness I see.
What does it mean when I say I Love You?
It means all of this and so much more!!!

I Promise

I promise to love you on our good days and bad.
I promise to respect you no matter how our opinions on the matter may clash
I promise to honor you by never putting you down nor allowing others.
I promise to try not to embarrass you in front of others.
I promise to stand by you in sickness and in health, for I love you.
I promise to share in the trails and tribulations life may throw our way.
I promise to help you no matter how different we may be.
I promise to hold our truth's dear.
This I promise you.

Overview

I Love You is among the simplest phrases a wedding poem can hold, yet its meaning grows through detail. In a ceremony reading, vow, toast, or private note, the words can become a doorway to the shared life behind them: early conversations, steady kindness, difficult seasons, private laughter, and hopes for the years ahead. A strong poem does more than repeat the phrase. It shows what love looks like between these two people and lets specific images carry the feeling.

The phrase may serve as an opening, a refrain, or a quiet final line. It can sound joyful, tender, playful, grateful, or reassuring, depending on the couple and the moment. Writers can also explore how saying “I love you” changes at a wedding: it remains an expression of affection while becoming a promise to keep listening, learning, and choosing one another. The result can be intimate without becoming overly ornate.

Meaning and Symbolism

In wedding poetry, I love you can symbolize both present feeling and future intention. The words acknowledge affection as it exists now, while the ceremony gives them a wider horizon: companionship, trust, care, and mutual growth. Their simplicity can suggest honesty, especially when surrounded by concrete details rather than grand declarations.

As a repeated line, the phrase may act like an anchor, returning the poem to its emotional center. Placed at the end, it can gather everything that came before into one clear statement. Its symbolism need not be solemn; in a lighthearted poem, it may also hold humor, familiarity, and the ease of being fully known. Most importantly, the phrase should reflect the couple’s own voice and understanding of commitment.

Wedding Poem Writing Ideas

Writing ideas: Let the familiar phrase gain meaning through memories, images, and promises that belong to the couple.

  • Begin with “I love you because,” then replace general reasons with specific moments, habits, or acts of care.
  • Move through three points in time: when the couple met, what they value now, and what they hope to build together.
  • Use “I love you” as a refrain, changing the words around it so each repetition reveals something new.
  • Describe one ordinary shared ritual, such as making breakfast or taking an evening walk, to show love in daily life.
  • Read the poem aloud and remove any line that feels unlike the speaker’s natural voice.

Sample Wedding Poem Lines

I love you in the plans we make and the pauses we do not need to fill.
Today, I say it before everyone: my life is kinder with yours beside it.
Our promise begins in words, then lives in every ordinary morning.
I choose the honest work of knowing you, and the joy of being known.
Let this simple sentence grow with us: I love you, still and newly.
